Open Data Ottawa 2011 CUSEC talk

Talk given by Edward Ocampo-Gooding(@edwardog) and Daniel Beauchamp(@pushmatrix) at CUSEC 2011.

Looking for that excuse to learn a new programming language? Think beyond simply making a "hello world" IOU beer app or bookshelf organizer. Let's face it; those just end up rotting away on your harddrive anyways. Why not make something that will bring you fame and glory? Why not use open data!

Cities and organizations across the world are releasing data sets that are begging for people to find and make awesome mashups.

  • We know you all love achievements, so we’ve riddled our presentation with them.
  • Hello World 1.0 is that typical IOU type beer app that we all end up making when trying to learn a new programming language. While it might seem fun at the time, it will normally end up rotting on your harddrive for the rest of its cycles. Why not do something that will still let you learn a new language, but will let you get fame and glory. Why not do Open Data?
  • lulz
  • Here’s a perfect example of an open data app. It’s buses mapped in REALTIME! OMGWTFBBQSAUCE that’s amazing. You want it? Open data will give it to you.
  • Although “public”, a .pdf calendar is not OPEN DATA. We want the raw stuff; the gewwwwd stuff. Let us worry about how to visualize it.
  • Download for free, or go to the website.
  • Music used to be here. For now, you can imagine sweet music……..soft music….calm music
  • Check to see if your city supports open data! Google is your friend 
  • Check out scraperwiki (http://scraperwiki.com/) for an awesome resource and repository for scrapers and manually collected data sets.
  • Find out if there’s a hackfest in your city. Open data is spreading like wildfire, so chances are there is one happening near by. And if there isn’t, start one.
