Public speaking coaching

  1. 1. PUBLIC SPEAKING COACHING TIPS FOR BECOMING A BETTER SPEAKER www.CommunicationSkillsTips.com These are the key takeaways from a coaching session I did with a client. I believe you’ll find them useful:1. Keep it conversational. Shorter sentences, shorter words. Use simple, easy to understand language.2. Title slide - needs a more contrasting background3. Good roadmap - work on making the slide look more visually appealing.Use Smart Art to create the roadmap. Get online to learn how to useSmartArt.4. Use colors in your presentation - dont limit yourself to black and blue.Colors help maintain audience attention.5. Font sizes - Minimum font size of 256. Get rid of the page numbers from the bottom of the slide. Page numbersare OK for documents but are not needed for a PPT presentation
  2. 2. 7. Work on the diagram on Page 5 - use thicker arrows to represent clearerlines of communication. Space it out. Make it big and easy to read from theback of the room.8. Audience involvement - get the audience physically involved by askingthem to raise their hands. Alternatively, personalize your speech by saying,"I was talking to Hassan earlier, who works in risk management. For thoseof you like Hassan in risk management, your job would be to...". This showsyour audience that youve customized your speech. It gives it an impromptufeel. And it makes your audience members feel special. Even though youinvolve only one member of the audience, the rest of the audience will livevicariously through the one person involved in the presentation.9. Work on clear transitions between each slide. The slides should not feellike distinct presentations - they should seamlessly flow from one to theother...10. Quotes - for Warren Buffets quote, have it up on the slide. Either have apicture of Warren Buffet next to the quote OR use a humorous image thatshows tide washing away showing half-naked person (Example: Slide 5 ofthis presentation): http://www.slideshare.net/garr/sample-slides-by-garr-reynoldsPeople are visual creatures. So spend time making your visuals morecompelling.11. Delivery. Pause after you ask questions. Let your audience think. Also, slow down when speaking...it will help your audience digest your pointsbetter...
