A Kiwis Survivors Guide To Moving To Melbourne

  1. 1. Part 1- Before you get there
  2. 2. Before Getting There Exploring the job market Research the property market Banking Taking your stuff Documents you need Websites to visit
  3. 3. Exploring the job market I worked with a number of consultancies in Melbourne and I can recommend some good recruitment executives if you are in the field product management or marketing . Drop me a line and I can pass you the details
  4. 4. Research the property market Jump on www.realestate.com.au to research properties for rent and sale. Good to get an idea of the different suburbs and prices before getting there We have been advised that there is “a lot of” demand for rental properties in Melbourne to the extent some agents auction off the weekly rental. Avg. rental pricing within CBD for 2-3 bedroom apartment/house is $400-600 per week Avg. rental pricing within the suburbs for a 2-3 bedroom home is $300-$500 per week
  5. 5. Banking Check with your bank about setting up an Australian account with their Aussi counterpart bank (Most major NZ banks have Australian owned) If you are with ASB they will make a ‘referral to CBA bank in Melbourne. CBA will contact you and set up a basic cheque account for you and give you an account number. You then have the option of doing a wire transfer of funds before you get to Melbourne or send a request to do so once you get there. All you have to do is present your passport at any of the CBA branches in Melbourne to validate the account.
  6. 6. Taking Your Stuff Sell the car - most people who have done it advise that the cost and hassle of taking a car and making it Australian Road worthy is not worth the hassle (especially if the car is more than 8 years old) Give away most of your cloths to friends and family or those in need. Take only the essentials and use the opportunity upgrade your wardrobe in Melbourne (things are better and cheaper)! Air New Zealand cargo has a discounted “unaccompanied” personal effects rate of ~ $2.50 p/kg if you are travelling with them. (Call 0800 747-777 option 1) to organise. You need to organise insurance for this You need to arrange insurance for air cargo. (e.g. AON Insurance charges a $270 for this international transit insurance for cargo worth up to $20000)
  7. 7. Documents you need Letter confirming resignation from your job in New Zealand – (Needed for Medicare application) Letter confirming sale or renting of your property in New Zealand – (Needed for Medicare application) Contract for the new job if this is finalised – (Needed for rental application) References if you are planning to rent - (Needed for rental application)
