Treatments For Psoriasis Arthritis Questions Answered
The most widespread treatment for psoriasis is the application of topical ointments and lotions
that can assist minimize the spread of the unpleasant scaly pores and skin patches associated
with the disease. Topical lotions normally turn out to be efficient in the course of the first phases
of psoriasis. The epidermis growth normally reacts positively to ointments and creams and may
disappear right after some time.

Maria asks…

What sets off the autoimmune gene that per my doctor can cause
different diseases and many forms?
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, my brother has Psorisis and I have a sister with Diabetes. My dad
had gout, is this where the gene originated from and what sets this gene off? I was in an
accident and was diagnosed not long after with RA.

admin answers:

It is still under investigation. Although, scientists have found an unexpected genetic link among
three common autoimmune diseases: “psoriasis”, “rheumatoid arthritis” and systemic lupus
erythematosus.

                                                                                              1 / 10
The findings, being reported recently in the journal Nature Genetics, have no immediate
practical effect. But by identifying a cellular path through which the three diseases are touched
off, they may help biologists design new treatments.

Psoriasis affects 2 percent of Americans; rheumatoid arthritis, up to 1 percent; and systemic
lupus — which attacks the joints and can cause severe inflammation — one-twentieth of 1
percent.

The link among the three diseases involves a PROTEIN that helps the thymus GLAND train
cells of the immune system. Autoimmune diseases are caused when such cells mistakenly
attack the body’s own tissues.

The protein, Runx-1, controls the activity of various genes by binding to a nearby site on the
DNA of the chromosomes. Last year, scientists at the University of Uppsala in Sweden reported
that many patients with systemic lupus had an altered Runx-1 binding site on Chromosome 2,
meaning that the Runx-1 protein could not properly control the gene next to the binding site.

Joseph asks…

Can the severe symptoms of psoriatic arthritis be reduced?
After several mis-diaganoses since my first visit to hospital in September 06 – they thought it
was fractured metatarsals/ cuboid bones – my specialist has eventually realised that I am a long
standing sufferer of Psoriasis. Psoriatic Arthritis is now suspected after a bone scan and the
blood tests should confirm it.

I am due to see my specialist again on 10th January and the foot pain/ difficulty in walking has
now spread to my knee causing locking, extreme pain and clicking noises.

                                                                                           2 / 10
Even more tests and delays are now anticipated, possibly a MRI scan with a 19 week waiting
list and a sample of fluid from my knee. Meanwhile I am only taking un-prescribed drugs –
Ibprofen and Anadin Extra – and am worried that irreversable damage may be caused due to
the delay in diagnosis. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? Will I always suffer pain and
disability? Why don’t doctors ask the right questions & arrange the right tests when you see
them? I feel let down by our Health Service

Treatment Options

Skin care
Light treatment (UVB or PUVA)
Corrective cosmetics
Medications: glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) such
as methotrexate, sulfasalazine, gold, cyclosporine
Exercise
Rest
Heat and cold
Splints
Surgery (rarely)

The wait for MRI scans is rediculous! I had to wait for about 2 months and only got one that
“quickly” as I could get to teh hospital at short notice!!!
I hope you get some solutions to your problem soon;

                                                                                             3 / 10
Steven asks…

Does anyone have any tips on managing psoriasis?
It’s mainly on my knees and lower legs, and I have a little on my elbows. Now that it’s summer,
I’d love to wear cute dresses and shorts, but I want to clear up my psoriasis first. Any
suggestions?

admin answers:

These are some natural remedies that will help manage Psoriasis..

* Peppermint Essential Oil Has Been Known to Relieve Skin Conditions Such as Psoriasis,
Eczema and Dermatitis. It Helps to Lessen the Redness of Skin and Also Prevents Irritation,
Itchiness and Joint Pain (for those with Psoriatic Arthritis)! Just remember not to ever use an
essential oil in its raw form on your bare skin!

* Rubbing Vitamin E Directly On the Affected Skin Will Help Moisturize and Heal the Skin. This
Natural Oil Will Also Help Prevent Scarring.

* Aloe ferox, commonly referred to as bitter aloe and red aloe, grows throughout the eastern
areas of South Africa. It is one of many aloe species used medicinally. Though it is not the
same as its sibling species aloe ve…ra, it yields chemically identical substances and is often
called by the same name.

According to the report in the International Journal of Pharma Sciences and Research, “a

                                                                                            4 / 10
double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the effect of aloe extract—0.5 percent in a
hydrophilic cream—for 60 psoriasis vulgaris patients, aged 18 to 50 years. The aloe cream cured
25 out of 30 patients compared with a placebo rate of 2 out of 30. The authors concluded it was
a safe alternative treatment for treating psoriasis.”

* Licorice Root Contains the Compound Glycyrrhetinic Acid (GA), Which Works Similar to
Hydrocortisone & Superior to Topical Cortisone In Treating Psoriasis, Eczema & Allergic
Dermatitis.

* Chamomile Contains Two Compounds; Levomenol & Azulene, Which Preliminary Studies
Show Act as Anti-Inflammatory Agents and Antioxidants to Repair Damaged Skin Cells Due To
Psoriasis.

* Neem oil is an emollient, a substance that softens and moistens dry cracked skin. This straight
away eliminates a lot of the irritation and itchiness. It moisturizes and protects, and heals any
lesions or scaling.

Neem also soothes the redness and irritation directly, through the steroid like effect of some of
its ingredients. Yes, neem can affect your skin similar to the way steroids do, but without all the
nasty side effects.

Neem oil generally enhances skin health and the natural immunity of your skin, which is one of
the biggest factors in psoriasis.

Neem oil is strongly antibacterial, and the benefit of this for psoriasis is obvious. Neem cleans
up any skin infections that may have developed because of cracked broken skin (due to
dryness or scratching). When used regularly (by using a neem soap, neem shampoo, or neem
lotion) neem also prevents any future skin infections that may aggravate or bring back psoriasis
symptoms.

What is the best way to get rid of psoriasis?
I’ve tried cortisone, but that doesn’t keep it away. Is there anything else I can do? Over the
counter medicine? My doctor subscribed lotion to me also, but didn’t work. Please help
Sorry, it’s not on my scalp. Its on the back of my neck, and on my leg

admin answers:

I have had what is called “P” since high school. I am now 46. I won’t go on about the social
and physical problems that come with it.

But my experience is to try everything. I have got rid of it a few times in my life and each time is
was due to different circumstances. One time I just gave up and ignored it. It went away.
Another time, I started using this stuff called Tegrin Lotion (no longer made) and it went away.

One time it cleared when I was doing a lot of drugs in my 20s. I don’t advocate it, but it did go
away. The last time I got rid of it was using a mix of zinc and steriod and some other crap. It
worked perfectly from the moment I sprayed it on. I felt it was over, finally. It wasn’t as I type
this, my skin is bad as ever.

So I guess the point I am trying to make is try everything, even stuff that didn’t work before may
work now.

The biggest thing you can do to help yourself is to not scratch, touch, peel, or even look at with
an evil eye. This is the only consistent I have found to keep it to a minimum. I know it is next to
impossible to not scratch or even touch, but will yourself to do it. Try silk pajamas or sheets (not
black ones). If you can handle a little sun, it seems to help a little as well.

But just remember the #1 rule: Don’t touch, scratch, peel, rub, or wear clothing that is hard on
your skin. It also helps to make some custom silk undergarments to cut down on friction from
clothes.

Mentally, try to remember that even though it seems like it, you are not the Lone Ranger. I am

  • 7. sure there are some Hollywood Celebrities who have it and just try to cope the best they can. I realize none of this paints a sunny picture, but it is the reality and the best way I know of living with it. The odd thing is that I am a writer as well. I don’t know if it strikes writers for some unknown reason. But I think writers just express their grief with a keyboard, while others talk about it. Hope this puts a little perspective on P. Nobody has a miracle cure and should some cream, ointment, treatment work for you, it doesn’t mean it will work for someone else. Oh yeah, I have relatives with the same problem. We call it the family curse. But again, just be strong and don’t scratch. The only thing that is universal in not to touch it. If the need to scratch is overwhelming, have a pharmasist develop a some zinc spray and it should the need to itch a little easier to live with. I know I am rambling and probably repeating myself. It scars all of us inside and out. Be thankfull it isn’t P arthritis, as I have seen that situation change peoples lives drastically. Again, I know I have not described a cure. There is none. There is only you and finding a way to cope. It is a very heartbreaking personal thing, but you gotta be tough and make it as easy on yourself as possible. That is best any of us can do. The products available can and will help, but the disease always seems to find a way back into your life. That is my personal experience. And on that note, I have decided to have my body cremated when I die, just to pay it back for all the humiliation and pain. Yes, the big P has warped me a little. Being honest with myself and world regarding my condition is my sheild. I am actually a much better writer. This is just such a personal, sad topic, I am just letting my emotions take over. So remember: you are not alone, but it does suck. And that’s all, folks. Clark Emery 7 / 10
  • 8. Mark asks… What is a good way to relax and remove stress? Between school, family, and other things I am feeling overwhelmed and kind of stressed over everything. What are some good ways to help me relax and feel at ease? admin answers: Exercise is execllent. Here are some techniques that might help too: There are three major types of relaxation techniques: Autogenic training. This technique uses both visual imagery and body awareness to move a person into a deep state of relaxation. The person imagines a peaceful place and then focuses on different physical sensations, moving from the feet to the head. For example, one might focus on warmth and heaviness in the limbs, easy, natural breathing, or a calm heartbeat. Progressive muscle relaxation. This technique involves slowly tensing and then releasing each muscle group individually, starting with the muscles in the toes and finishing with those in the head. Meditation. The two most popular forms of meditation in the U.S. Include Transcendental Meditation (students repeat a mantra [a single word or phrase],) and mindfulness meditation (students focus their attention on their moment-by-moment thoughts and sensations). How do relaxation techniques work? When we become stressed, our bodies engage in something called the “fight or flight 8 / 10
  • 9. response.” The fight or flight response refers to changes that occur in the body when it prepares to either fight or run. These changes include increased heart rate, blood pressure, and rate of breathing, and a 300 to 400 percent increase in the amount of blood being pumped to the muscles. Over time, these reactions raise cholesterol levels, disturb intestinal activities, and depress the immune system. In general, they leave us feeling “stressed out.” However, we also possess the opposite of the fight or flight response—the “relaxation response.” This term, first coined in the mid-1970s by a Harvard cardiologist named Herbert Benson, refers to changes that occur in the body when it is in a deep state of relaxation. These changes include decreased blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and rate of breathing, as well as feelings of being calm and in control. Learning the relaxation response helps to counter the ill effects of the fight or flight response and, over time, allow the development of a greater state of alertness.
