  3. 3. Minerals <ul><li>Minerals are neither plant nor animal and occur naturally. </li></ul><ul><li>Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. </li></ul><ul><li>There are four ways we identify minerals </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Color, luster, streak, and hardness. </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Mineral Color <ul><li>Color is one way we identify minerals </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Problems: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Some minerals can be more than one color </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Many minerals may be the same color. </li></ul></ul></ul>Quartz Fluorite
  5. 5. Minerals <ul><li>Streak </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Streak color is sometimes different than the solid color. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Usually the streak is the same. </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Minerals <ul><li>Hardness </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Anything that scratches a mineral is harder than the mineral. </li></ul></ul>

Igneous Rocks <ul><li>Fire Made </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cooled magma </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cools slowly – big grains (crystals) </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cools quickly – tiny grains (crystals) </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cools instantly – no grains (glass) </li></ul></ul></ul>

Sedimentary Rocks <ul><li>Rocks formed from bits or layers of rocks cementer together. </li></ul><ul><li>When rocks are weathered they break into tiny pieces. </li></ul><ul><li>When the tiny pieces are eroded they eventually get deposited. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sediments are deposited rock pieces. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Sediments – water – air = rocks </li></ul></ul>
  10. 11. Metamorphic Rock <ul><li>A rock that has been changed from one kind of rock into another kind of rock. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Heat & pressure </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Creates mineral bands </li></ul></ul>
