EcoUrbanism is about wholesystem thinking, taking in consideration existing natural and cultural structures and using them as point of departure in planning and design at the Bergen School of Architecture in Norway.

This master course has focused on urban situations in Bergen and in Floroe on the west coast of Norway.


The Bergen School of Architecture is a private, academic and pedagogic alternative to the traditional polytechnic educational facilities producing architects.

Students enrolled here are accepted through a personal interview and review of a creative, personal portfolio. The students are highly motivated and travel extensively throughout the 5 years of study. The 2nd day of study starts with 4 weeks on a small island, far out west - where the icecap melted and settlers first came to Scandinavia.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMAGINE THE UNTHINKABLE - TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF RECENT RESEARCH ON CLIMATE CHANGE SO WE MAY BETTER GLOBAL UNDERSTAND THE POTENCIAL IMPLICATIONS ON NORWAYS'S FUTURE. THERE IS SUBSTANCIAL EVIDENCE TO INDICATE THAT SIGNIFICANT GLOBAL WARMING WILL OCCUR DURING THE 21TH CENTURY. CHANGES IN GLOBAL WARMING HAVE BEEN GRADUAL SO FAR AND THIS COULD LEAD TO RELATIVELY ABRUPT SLOWING OF THE OCEAN'S THERMOHALINE CONVEYOR. THE EXTENSION OF THE THERMOCLINE LAYER INTO ARTIC AND ANTARCTIC WATERS IS PREVENTING THE OVERTURNING AND NUTRIENT ENRICHMENT NECESSARY FOR ALGAL BLOOMS OF PHYTOPLANKTON ON WHICH THE ECOSYSTEMS OF THESE AREAS DEPEND. IF WE CONTINUE THIS LINEAR GRADUAL LOSS OF PHYTOPLANKTON AND TROPICAL RAIN FLOREST, TWO OF THE MAIN CARBON DIOXIDE SINKS FOR REDUCING GLOBAL WARMING, COULD CAUSE TROPICAL DESERTS TO COVER MOST OF THE WORLD'S TROPICAL REGIONS. THIS WILL RESULT ALSO IN RISING SEA LEVEL AND THEREFORE IT WOULD MAKE MANY AREAS UNINHABITABLE LEADING TO MASS MIGRATION AND INEVITABLY SPARKING VIOLENT CONFLITS. YOU'LL SEE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, PERHAPS BILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO WOULD HAVE TO MOVE TO MORE DESIRABLE, ACCESSIBLE AREAS, LIKE SCANDINAVIA.

  10. 10. DESCENTRALIZATION LAKSEVAG´S TYPOGRAPHY IS CONNECTED CLOSELY TO THE CITY CENTER WHILE THE PRESENT INFRASTRUCTURE AND LAND USE IN LAKSEVAG MAKES IT A SUBURB OF BERGEN TODAY. TODAY HALF OF THE POPULATION OF BERGEN WORKS INSIDE THE CITY CENTER AND IS LIVING OUTSIDE IN THE SUBURB. LAKSEVAG WOULD BE A LOGICAL PLACE TO START THE CONDENSATION OF THE CITY TO REDUCE THE ENERGY SPENT ON TRANSPORT. LAKSEVAG HAVE THE POSSIBILITY TO START GROWING WITHOUT A HEAVY SUPPORT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION. UNTIL THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS BUILT OUT IT MUST BE IN THE COMMOM INTEREST TO DEVELOP AN ATTRACTIVE PEDESTRIAN/BIKE PASSAGES TO THE CITY CENTER. LAKSEVAG IS TODAY ONE OF THE TWO LOCATIONS INSIDE THE CITY HILLS, WHERE IT IS PERMITTED TO BUILD HIGH (50M). A CONDENSATION OF LAKSEVAG WOULD LEAD TO A URBAN RENEWAL AND ADDITION OF NEW PEOPLE AND RESOURCES. A TARGET WOULD BE, THAT LAKSEVAG WOULD DEVELOP INTO A PART OF THE CITY CENTER AND CONTRIBUTE ACTIVELY TO IT.

MIGRATION IN THE FUTURE, PEOPLE HOPEFULLY WOULD LIVE AS STRATEGIC AS POSSIBLE, CONTRIBUTING TO A TRANSPORT EFFICIENT SOCIETY WHICH GROWS TO A GREEN CITYSCAPE.

OUR CO2 FOOTPRINT MUST BE REDUCED TO AVOID SUCH A SCENARIO OF 100.000 PEOPLE LIVING IN A FUNCTIONAL BUT EXTREMELY DENSE SITUATION WHERE ITS SIMPLY HARD TO BREATH.
