    1. 1. PRESENTATION OF E-COMMERCE
    2. 2. PRESENTATION OF EDI-FACT
    3. 3. CONTENTS 1- INTRODUCTION OF EDI 2- STANDARDIZATION AND EDI 3- COMPARISON OF EDIFACT AND X.12 STANDARDS 4- REFERENCE
    4. 4. INTRODUCTION OF EDI THE FULLFORM OF EDI IS KNOWN AS ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE . EDI DEVELOPED IN THE 1960s AS A MEANS OF ACCELERATING THE MOVEMENT OF DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO SHIPMENTS AND TRANSPORTATION. ELECTRONIC COMMERCE IS OFTEN EQUATED WITH EDI , SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO CLARIFY THAT ELECTRONIC COMMERCE EMBRACES EDI AND MUCH MORE. IN ELECTRONIC COMMERCE, EDI TECHNIQUES ARE AIMED AT IMPROVING THE INTERCHANGE OF INFORMATION BETWEEN TRADING PARTNERS , SUPPLIERS ,AND CUSTOMERS BY BRINGING DOWN THE BOUNDARIES THAT RESTRICT HOW THEY INTERACT AND DO BUSINESS WITH EACH OTHER. EDI IS AIMED AT FORGING BOUNDRY LESS RELATIONSHIPS .
    5. 5. STANDARDIZATION AND EDI THE ADVANTAGES OF STANDARDIZATION ARE NUMEROUS. ONE FIELD THAT BENEFITED IMMENSELY FROM STANDAR- DIZATION IS THE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY. IN THE 1960s AND 1970s ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS WERE DESIGNED WITHOUT CONCERNED FOR COMPATIBILITY. THIS CREATED A LOT OF CONFUSION AND SPURRED THE INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS(IEEE) TO ISSUE GUIDELINE STANDARDS FOR CAPACITOR, REGISTORS, POWER SUPPLIES, AND OTHER COMPONET. AS COMPONENT BECAME SUBSTITUTABLE, PRODUCTION BOOMED, COMP- ETETION INCREASED, AND PRICE DEFLATED. TODAY, TWO MAJOR EDI STANDARD EXIST: THE AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE(ANSI)X.12 COMMITTEE AND THE UNITED NATAIONS EDI FOR ADMINISTRATION, COMMERCE,TRADE(EDI FACT) STANDARD FOR INTERNATI- ONAL USAGE..
    6. 6. The EDIFACT is developed by UNITED NATIONS EDIFACT is a family of standards similar to ANSI X .12. EDIFACT was based on TRADECOMS,developed by the U.K. department of customs and Excise with the Assistance of SITPRO(the British simplification of Trade procedures Board). It was further developed by the UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC COMMISION FOR EUROPE Working party on facilitation of International Trade Procedures(UN/ECE/WP4) . EDIFACT is becoming widely accepted as the foremost international EDI standard . Today , EDIFACT and ANSI are working towards compatibility . EDIFACT

    8. 8. ANSI X.12 EDI IN NORTH AMERICA DEVELOPED WITH DIFFERING STANDARDS IN THE VARIOUS BUSINESS SECTORS. EXAMPLE OF SUCH STANDARDS ARE UCS FOR THE GROCERY. INDUSTRY AND ORDERNET FOR THE PHARMACEUTICAL TRADEL. ELECTRONIC TRADE HAD DEVELOPED RAPIDLY IN NORTH AMERICA AND THE PROBLEMS OF CROSS SECTOR TRADE WERE BECOMING APPARENT. THE PROBLEM WAS TAKEN UP BY THE AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD INSTITUTE AND X.12 WAS DEVELOPED AS A NATIONAL STANDARD WITH THE AIM OF REPLACING THE VARIOUS SECTOR STANDARDS.
    9. 9. COMPARISON OF EDI FACT AND X.12 STANDARDS BOTH EDI FACT AND X.12 ARE COMPRISED OF STRINGS OF DATA ELEMENTS CALLED SEGMENTS. A TRANSACTION ST IS A SET OF SEGMENTS ORDERED AS SPECIFIED BY STANDARD. ANSI STANDARD REQUIRED EACH ELEMENT TO HAVE A VERY SPECIFIC NAME, SUCH AS ORDER DATE OR INVOICE DATE. EDI FACT SEGMENTS, IN CONTRAST ALLOW FOR GENERIC, OR MULTIUSED ELEMENT,SUCH AS DATE. A QUALIFIER, SUCH AS ORDER OR INVOICE, ACCOMPANIES THE GENERIC ELEMENT IDENTIFYING WHAT RELATES TO. IN ASSENCE EDI FACT HAS FEWER DATA ELEMENT AND SEGMENTS AND ONLY ONE BEGINNING SEGEMTNS, BUT IT HAS MORE COMPOSITES.
