I-Corps Team Structure• Principal Investigator (PI) – Usually, but not always, a university professor – NSF-funded research project active within past 5 years – Knows the science, inside and out, at world-class level – Has had lifelong education and training in his/her discipline…but not in entrepreneurship – Intends to eventually return to teaching and research• Entrepreneurial Lead (E-Lead or EL) – Often, but not always, a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow working with PI on research – Knows the science, but emphasizes application – Devotes nearly full-time to the project in progress – Intends to stay with the project as it grows

How to Make a Difference as a Mentor• Provide the voice of experience• Offer a business context to gifted scientists• Translate concepts from business domain• Suggest solutions obvious to you, but foreign to a PI who has spent decades in a research lab• Lend credibility in negotiations with customers• Work with other mentors and I-Corps staff to get PIs to accept criticism and to “pivot”• Help PI avoid major expensive mistakes

Mentor Time Commitment over Life of I-Corps Project• Pre-award – Participate in 3 critical conference calls with NSF• Between award and initial session at Node – Read materials – Collaborate on initial presentations• Team activities at Node (initial session) – Travel + 3 days of nonstop interaction in-person at Node• Weekly (webinars, customer visits) – Weekly webinars and team report-outs – Visiting customers is encouraged but not 100% required• Team activities at Node (final session) – Travel + 2 days of nonstop interaction in-person at Node• Post-finale – Up to you

Compensation• Directly from NSF I-Corps Grant – Reimbursement of travel and other direct expenses – No mechanism for explicit mentor compensation• From sponsoring institution – Left to institutions, PIs, and mentors to negotiate• From startup company – Left to mentors to negotiate with/as co-founders
