 Helen’s teacher told Helen about new things . She asked few
questions. As Her ideas were vague , and her vocabulary
was inadequate; but as her knowledge grew and she learned
more and more words , her field of inquiry broadened . She
returned to the same subject repeatedly, eager for more and
more information. One day Helen brought a bunch of
violets for her teacher. Miss Sullivan put her arm around
Helen to show her affection and spelled into her hand, “I
love Helen”. But Helen failed to understand the meaning as
she tried associating it with a thing and not with an emotion
or an abstract idea.
 She was disappointed by the fact that her teacher could
not “show” her what love meant. A couple of days later,
when Helen was stringing beads of different sizes, her
teacher kept on pointing out mistakes to her. Helen was
trying to think about the correct arrangement when
Miss Sullivan touched her forehead and spelled the
word “think” on her hand. Helen suddenly realized
that the word is the name of the process going on in her
mind. This was Helen’s first conscious awareness of an
abstract idea. At once Helen felt that the process going
in her head was ‘love’ . The teacher told her that “love
is something like the clouds that were in the sky before
the sun came out”. Miss Sullivan further explained that
Helen couldn’t touch the clouds.
 But she could feel the rain and know how glad the flowers
and the thirsty earth were to have it after a hot day . ‘love’
meant the sweetness that it poured into everything . Without
love no one would be happy and want to play . Helen
understood that ‘love’ was the invisible line stretched
between her spirit and the spirit of others . Thus she learned
the meaning of the abstract idea.
 Miss Sullivan encouraged Helen to talk to her. She supplied
her with several words and idioms by spelling them on her
hand. It was a long and tedious process that continued for
several years. This was because Helen could neither
distinguish between the different tonalities of the speaker
nor look at his expressions.
 Despite learning language is difficult task for deaf and
blind, Helen learnt many words and broadened her
knowledge.
 Miss Sullivan tried to explain the meaning of love to her
but she fail to understand.
 Miss Sullivan made Helen understood the word ‘think’ and
later also explained about love.
 Miss Sullivan encouraged her to participate in the
conversation and provided various support in doing this.
i. How did miss Sullivan explain the meaning of
the word ‘love’ to the narrator ?
 For a long time the narrator was still , she was not thinking
of the beads in her laps but was trying to find a meaning
for the word “love”. At the time the sun broke forth in all its
southern splendor . She enquired from miss Sullivan if what
she saw was ‘love’. Miss Sullivan explained that “love is
something like the clouds that were in the sky before the sun
came out”. She explained that one cannot touch the clouds,
But she could feel the rain and know how glad the flowers
and the thirsty earth were to have it after a hot day . ‘love’
meant the sweetness that it poured into everything . Without
love no one would be happy and want to play .
ii. How did Miss Sullivan overcome the deficiency of
a deaf child like the narrator ?
 The child who can hear and learns the everyday
expressions through constant repeating and
imitation . The conversation he hears in his home
stimulates his mind and he puts forward his
thoughts orally . This natural exchange of ideas is
denied to the deaf child . Miss Sullivan overcome
this deficiency of narrator by being determined
to supply the kind of stimulus that the narrator
lacked . She did repeating to her as far as possible
, by spelling word by word on the hand , what she
heard , and by showing her how she could take
part in the conversation .
iii. What did the narrator say about the deaf and the
blind people ?
 The narrator said that the deaf and blind people
find it very difficult to acquire the amenities of
conversation . She said that they can never
distinguish the tone of the voice or , without
assistance , go up and down the gamut of tones that
gives significance to words ;nor can they watch the
expression of the speaker's face , and a look is
often the very soul of what one says .
