Pearl Earring Griet
FILM STUDY WORKSHEET
1.In the film "The girl with the pearl earring" by Peter Webber it's about a young girl named Griet
who is hired by the Vermeer's family to be the maid in the city of Dealft, Holland in 1655. The film
takes an interesting turn when Griet began to work more as the personal assistant of Johannes
Vermeer than as the household maid. Griet experimented admiration from Johannes and even some
other feeling that involve passion, though from a very beginning she was dating the butcher's town.
Johannes paint Griet due the insistence of Van Rujiven and use his wife's earrings for his
masterpiece. The film comes to an end when Catherina driven by jealousy fired Griet who received
from Johannes the pearl earrings she used...show more content...
An ideological factor (which can also be an economical factor) of the film is that a maid should not
be treated with the same respect as the owners of the house in which she serves. This is due to the
time in which the movie is located and because it was though that people who had not the same
economical range as rich ones were less than them.
9.We can learn from the film "The girl with a pearl earring" that the passion for art can make people
felt in love between them (in this case Griet and Johannes) despites not having more in common
and can make them understand each other because of this "passion". Also that the arrival of a
new member in a family (in this case a maid) can cause problems such as jealousy. 10.In my
opinion, a movie can help you understand better the historical events because when you read
them in a book you are able to get information but you are not able to see the facts as they passed
with your own eyes as you can do in a movie. Moreover, it is much easier to understand a movie
than a book according to most of the people, but despites this, it is true that not everything that
happens in a movie may be true because the directors are driven by what may be more interesting
for viewers to see that what actually happened and that's why most of the people prefer to see a
book if they want the reliably

Girl With A Pearl Earring Analysis
Girl with a Pearl Earring
The painting I chose was Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, one of Vermeer's most
famous paintings (Figure 1). Girl with a Pearl Earring was painted in 1665. It is housed in
Mauritshuis at The Hauge in South Holland. The dimensions are 17.5 inches by 15 inches. The
medium was oil on canvas. This piece of art is representational. From the museum's website, the
painting as not a portrait, "...but a 'tronie' – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain
type or character; in this case a girl in exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably
large pearl in her ear. (3)"

It was made in October of 2013 by New England cartoonist Mark Parisi. In the cartoon, the girl has
multiple piercings throughout her face instead of just the one in her earlobe.
In the 21st century, it isn't uncommon to see people in America with multiple piercings throughout
their faces and this is pointing out just that– the 17th century and their piercings are very different
from the piercings in the 21st century.
Reproduction
This reproduction is an advertisement for an Italian textile company called Zucchi Basetti. The
advertisement features the painting but instead of the turban on her head, she has a blue bath towel,
that is a picture not painted, wrapped around. There is text on the poster that says "Puro Cotone Su
Tera" which translates to "Pure Cotton on Canvas". The date or placement of this advertisement is
unknown. This is a clever reproduction in my eyes– the text stating that it's cotton– like the towel
she has on her head– on canvas– which is what paintings usually are painted on. The text on the
advertisement is very small, but I believe it's because the company wanted to showcase the girl and
the towel on top of her

Analysis Of ' The Girl With The Pearl Earring '
Artists and warriors have more in common than most people realize. An artist is characterized as
a person who sees things in a different perspective, someone who can take anything and make it
beautiful, an artist is a visionary of the world and things around them. Warriors are the people that
fight in the battle of right and wrong;, they step on to a battlefield and turn it into a symbol of
peace., a warrior has a vision of a better world and never stop fighting for it. Artists and warriors
may seem different, but they have more in common than we imagine. An artist is programmed to
look at things in different and new ways. In The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Johannes Vermeer
the famed artist, asks Griet his young maid to look up at the sky. He asks her "What color do you
see?" She without really thinking about it says "blue." Then he doesn't say anything, while she
goes on to tell him all the colors she sees, like gray, yellow, etc. She sees things in the way that he
does, in a different perspective that an average person may not look at it in that way. She relates
to him in a way no one else can, they share a unique perspective that not many can say they have.
Not only can artists look at things in a more detailed and interesting way, they also have a way of
making things beautiful and reaching for their true beauty and importance. When I think of an artist
I think of a bowl of fruit., While when not many can look at a bowl of ordinary fruit and call it
beautiful, but an

Girl with a Pearl Earring is a fictional book that is based off of the painting Girl with a Pearl
Earring. It gives the painting a background story and a makes up personas for Vermeer and the
model in the photo. The Girl with a Pearl Earring is a very historical painting and is sometimes
referred to as the Dutch Mona Lisa. It is very well known for highlighting the artistic
achievements of the Dutch Golden Age. This book is an interesting interpretation on the
backstory of the painting; it also gives insight on the time period and the artistic style of the
Dutch Golden Age. After Griet's father went blind she is forced to get a job to support her
family. She is hired as a maid by the famous artist Johannes Vermeer and his wife Catharina. Griet
eventually develops an unlikely friendship with Johannes. He asks her to clean his studio that no
one else is even allowed to enter. Johannes asks Griet to run special chores for him, such as getting
him his paints, which he normally did by himself. He also has her grind and makes the paints for his
art pieces. Catharina would get jealous that Griet gets to spend more time with her husband than she

The most interesting thing I learned from it was how they made paint back in 1600s. They grinded
up different substances into a paste and made paint out of those. Ultramarine was one of the most
difficult shades of paint to make "the process of extracting a pure blue from the stone so difficult,
that he worked with it himself"(180). This shows how important the painting of the girl with a pearl
earing is, because a good portion of the painting is done with blue paint. The author does discuss
historical events that are happening around the time period that this painting was painted. The
plague is a somewhat serious threat in the book. Griet's little sister Agnes dies because of the plague.
Pieter informed Griet that Angus was infected "She is very

Comparison of the Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mona Lisa
The Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mona Lisa are the two most famous portraits ever painted
(Courtauld 36). The girl with a pearl earring follows the Mona Lisa painting, which is considered as
the most famous painting. The girl with a pearl earring, by Johannes Vermeer, and the Mona Lisa by
Leonardo da Vinci were created during the same historical time. Historians believe that Leonardo
da Vinci created his art piece between 1503 and 1506. The girl with a pearl earring was created in
1665. The masterpieces were both created using oil. The medium for the girl with a pearl earring
was oil and canvas while Mona Lisa was created using oil and wood. They were both from the genre
of portrait art.
The two portraits are associated with mysteries that have baffled analysts and historians for many
years. First, the identity of the women was vastly unknown. The exact identity of the woman in the
Mona Lisa has remained a mystery. While searching for answers, historians sought to know the time
when the portrait was created. According to them, the portrait must have been created when
Francesco Del Giocondo and his wife purchased a house in 1503 or during the birth of their son in
1502. Thus, some analysts conclude that the portrait was dedicated to the wife of Francesco Del
Giocondo. The nature of clothing often backs the argument. The gown and scarf represented an
aristocratic status. The

The Mona Lisa and The Girl with The Pearl Earring are two paintings that say a lot without out
even speaking. From the slight smirk of secrecy to the cut eyes of urgency these two paintings have
kept society guessing about their true meaning and what they stood for in the artistry realm. The Girl
with The Pearl earring and the Mona Lisa display an array of differences and similarities that are
pretty evident to the human eye.
The Mona Lisa was painted in 1503 through 1507 but was never finished by Leonardo Da Vinci in
Florence, Italy. Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa using oil paint on a wood panel as his canvas. The
style that Da Vinci created is known as sfumato. Sfumato means that there are no harsh outline and

He paints the Mona Lisa with eyes that vocalize that "I have a secret that will take you a life time
to figure out". With the addition to her smile which has a light smirk to that also says "and I'm
not going to tell you". I believe that the best thing about women is we all possess the feel and
look of secrecy and modesty from the stigma of innocence that is placed upon women. Da Vinci
also communicates a sense of calmness and wisdom as if he painted her right as she has completed
what she was put on this earth to do, this feeling I also associate with those that are up in age or the
elders of the community.
The Girl with The Pearl Earring was created by Johannes Vermeer in 1665 through 1667 in
Mauritchius, The Hague. The portrait was painted on regular canvas using oil paints. The painting
was created during the Dutch realism movement, during this time the spanning of the seventeenth
century was in full swing during the later time of the eighty year war for Dutch independence. The
painting was a part of a collection of Dutch art that portrays the idealized woman of that era,
subservient docile attitude the homemaker or even

What is workmanship? Craftsmanship is from the Latin root and stands for the expression or
utilization of inventive ability and creative energy, regularly in a visual frame, for example,

enthusiastic power. When painting, there are numerous approaches to do as such. There is the
system of doing oil works of art. There are numerous well known compositions still today that are

I.The novel's genre is Historical Fiction, the author wrote a fictitious story behind Johannes
Vermeer's painting. The significance of the title is very big because it displays the main idea of
the book and what the author previously wrote about, this book is based off of the painting, Girl
with a pearl Earring. The main idea of the story is to help others imagine the life of the girl in the
painting because in reality, we don't know much about the girl in the painting. In this book, the
author sees her as Griet, a sixteen–year–old girl that is forced to work as a maid for the Vermeer's
due to her family's poor economic status. She's very hardworking and independent, but she soon
becomes Johannes' assistant, and helps him in his studio. The two form a bit of a platonic
relationship; Griet becomes attracted to his mysterious ways, and is willing to pose for him, even
though she knew there were consequences. This book's content makes me think that everybody
interested in art and in the story behind the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring will read this book,
primarily the "ideal" audience of this book is young adults, as well as adults. II.The protagonist is
Griet, she's portrayed as modest, innocent, intelligent, discrete and attentive. She's modest and
discrete because she tries her best to not disturb the peace of the household at first, she is told that
she isn't like "other maids" because she doesn't gossip much, or doesn't steal anything from the
house. She's very

The movie and the novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring, were almost as fascinating as the Dutch
painter Johannes Vermeer's paintings. I enjoyed both the movie and the novel very much. I think
that it was a marvelous idea to assign this summer reading book for art class. Tracy Chevalier did
not only put an amazing plot into this book she also made sure that Vermeer gave us art lessons
throughout the book. I love art, but never had a chance to take lessons so this gave me an
opportunity to learn a few things. Also, especially admire the time period that this book was set
in. The novel and the movie were based on the same story, but in some ways they were very
distinct. Given the assignment to compare and contrast the two things I have to admit that it was
easier to contrast. There were a few obvious differences, but also a lot of little ones that were
harder to notice. The big difference was that the book was much more precise than the movie. There
were lots of scenes that were not shown in the movie that were written in the book. The first big
missing scene that I noticed was the...show more content...

Also, in the book Griet visited her parents on Sundays and most of the visits were described. In the
movie we hardly saw the parents and she didn't visit them. There were also lots of missing scenes
with Pieter which made getting to know him more difficult. I think that most of the changes made in
the movie were because they needed the movie to be shorter and they wanted to focus the plot more
on Greit, Vermeer, Van Ruijven, Catharina and less on the other insignificant characters and events

Essay about Girl with a Pearl Earring
In the novel Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, Griet faces many challenges which
causes her identity to change. Though Griet starts out as an innocent maid who has to follow orders,
she starts developing her own opinion and the ability to make decisions. Griet changes from an
household servant to having the courage to share her opinion to a mature lady, capable of making
her own decisions. Many factors contribute to the change in Griet's identity, but the main factor is
Vermeer, her master. At first, Griet is viewed as an innocent girl, who is compelled to work as an
maid due to her father's incapability to provide for her family. She does not want to leave her family
and go to an unknown place, but she has to; in order...show more content...
This supports Griet's change in identity, form being too scared to speaking her mind to having the
courage to give her opinion to her master. Near the end, Griet's identity has gone through the
process of a young maid to a mature lady. At first, Griet's opinion held no importance. She does
not have a say in anything. This is evident when she says, " ' What would I think, madam?'"(157).
Griet has certainly developed an opinion, but not the courage to speak it in front of others. She is
aware of her status as a maid. This changes throughout the course of the novel. Griet does develop
the courage to take the decision of her life as well as carry it out. " 'I did not pick up the knife. I
turned and walked from the room'"(215). This quote illustrates Griet's ability to make and carry out
decisions. She is not going to tolerate any wrong accusations, and she has learned to take a stand
for herself. This change occurs due to Vermeer and his art. Somewhere in between, Griet realizes
that she has had enough, and she's not going to let anyone come and accuse her of doing something
she didn't do. Vermeer and his paintings made Griet feel that she does hold importance, and no one
has the right to accuse her wrongfully. Therefore, Griet's identity undergoes a lot of changes
throughout the novel. First, she is maid who is duty– bound to work in an unknown place due to her
family's needs'. As the book continues, she starts developing her opinion as well as

Johannes Veermeer Accomplishments
Very little is known about Johannes Vermeer. He was exclusively devoted to the arts. Due to his
elusiveness, Thore Burger named him "The Sphinx of Delft" ("Biography of"). Vermeer was an
artist during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of wealth for the Netherlands. Many outbreaks of the
plague had come and gone, but things were finally returning to what they were like before it began.
Trade flourished through the East India Company. The arts became popular, and artists were gaining
wealth and fame. Many art guilds were formed where artists could communicate with other artists in
their community.
Johannes Vermeer's paintings deeply impacted the Dutch Golden Age. Girl With a Pearl Earring by
Tracy Chevalier is a fictional story told from the point of view of Griet, a maid in the Vermeer
household in Delft, Netherlands. Griet is a fictional muse that Chevalier created for Vermeer's
painting The Girl With a Pearl Earring. Griet shows through her eyes how Johannes Vermeer began
his paintings, the painting process, and how he ended them. The Netherlands was thriving during the
time Vermeer lived, the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer was an influential artist who contributed to the
Netherland's Golden Age. The independent novel Girl With a Pearl Earring showcases the
realisticness of Vermeer's paintings and his affiliation in Dutch society.
Vermeer used a unique color of blue, or ultramarine, in his works called "Delft Blue." Delft Blue is

Girl With A Pearl Earring Analysis
While reading the book, Girl With a Pearl Earring, it is hard not to compare life during that time
period to today's society and culture. The first major difference is obviously the divide in
religion. An example of this is on page 136 when Griet's mother made a statement about the
master's paintings. She said, "I think his paintings are not good for the soul". She was clearly
offended because in her mind Greit's master's paintings were Catholic. I could not imagine what
she would think about today's society. Region is almost completely separate from work, school and
much of life. During the book, region was everything to people. Today it is a topic, like politics,
people avoid due to conflicts. Another big difference in our society and Griets

The novel The Girl With the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier has an interesting, unique tone that
is clearly expressed by its picturesque and meticulous word choice, imagery and details. The novel
is set in the 17th century of Holland in a small town called Deft and is told from the perspective of
sixteen–year old Griet who explores the world of art and painters, and the complexity behind the
world that seems so simple to outsiders. A particular scene comes to mind and best embodies a
somber, tense tone and mood between the characters in the novel. On page 215, it is in the middle
of the climax and an exciting moment of action in which where Griet is involved in a fight between
her employers the painter Johannes Vermeer and hiswife Catharina.

Griet is aware she has much to learn about the world. Furthermore, under Vermeer's roof, Griet's self

It does not take long before Griet begins to feel she has "two families now and they must not mix"
As Griet's ties with her family begin to weaken, so too, do her moral convictions. Griet is so
blinded by her infatuation with Vermeer that she becomes his servant not on just a domestic, but an
emotional level as well. She sacrifices her morals on many occasions and does not remain true to
herself– "I did whatever he asked of me". We see the truth in Van Leeuwenhoek's warning that the
"women in his paintings–he traps them in his world," as it is only with Vermeer that Griet loses
control.
When she was with Pieter she would "not let him do all he wanted", but for Vermeer she pierces her
ears, parts her lips, reveals her hair and is in all sense a "ruined" woman.
Not only does Vermeer become the focus for Griet's emergent sexuality, he also serves to expand
her mind and perspective on life. Teaching her that there is "little pure white in clouds", Griet
realises that the world is not always as it seems. Similarly, Griet's religious prejudices instilled in
her by her family and society are quelled by Vermeer who teaches her that "Its not the painting that
is catholic or ProtestantВ…but the people who look at it, and what they expect to see".
Furthermore, Griet's artistic ability is fostered by Vermeer as he teaches her to grind paints and

author's clever combination of an intriguing story, remarkable characters and descriptive language
allowed her to explore the themes of forbidden love, predators and sexual desires.

Vermeer asked Griet to wear his wife's pearl earrings for the sitting. She knew it would cause
more trouble but was obedient to the man she had fallen in love with. This complication built
suspense for the readers as they anticipated the wife's reaction. After Vermeer's wife saw the
earrings in the painting, she tried to destroy it. Griet knew she had to leave. She chose to go to
Pieter who she later married. When Vermeer died 10 years later, he left the pearl earrings to Griet in
his will. The author's mix of realistic events, romantic love, and unwanted sexual encounters reflect a
timeless storyline that would appeal to young adults in today's society, facing the same problems.
The author has skillfully constructed the characters to assist young readers to connect with them.
The main character, Griet, is a quiet, lonely, innocent and vulnerable young lady. When Van
Ruijven cornered Griet in the hallway and grabbed her chin, she did not feel at all comfortable: "I
did not like the way he looked at me". Griet had some artistic talent and vision and wanted this to
be recognized by her master, but was too shy to say anything. She was looking for love and
security, which she found in Vermeer. Vermeer's remarkable character draws young readers in as he
was portrayed as a very gentle, caring and loyal man – the type of man you would want to marry.

In her novel Girl with a pearl earring, Tracey Chevalier, explores many thematic concerns in relation
to women, in the 1600s. She explored this through the themes of; the restricted roles of women, the
battle of the sexes and Class, money, gender and power, she utilises literary techniques; such as
dialogue, first person, exclamation and allusion to convey these themes.
In a girl with the pearl earring the protagonist, Griet, is sent to be a maid the artist Johannes

eventually the secretive painting of Griet seeps out into the rest of the family and the town beyond.

The restricted roles of women, are explored by Chevalier in Girl with a pearl earring, through
literary techniques which convey women's complete lack of power, forever stuck on the outside of a
man's world, trapped and anxious with the little power they manage to obtain.
The battle of the sexes is one of the thematic concerns explored by Chevalier in a Girl with a pearl
earring. This theme looks at women having to outmanoeuvre the men, with whatever means they
control. In this case Griet has the gift of beauty which she not only uses with Pieter, stringing him
along until she's ready to settle down, but also with Vermeer, "I will like to look again sir, but only
if I'm left alone", Chevaliers effective piece of dialogue, conveys Griet, attempting to use her power
as an attractive women to get what she wants. The battle of the sexes proves that women, living in a
man's world had to utilise any means they could to survive.
In conjunction with a battle of the sexes, is the battle within genders. The power play between, Griet
and Catherina is one such example and just one of the many female struggles within the novel.
Cornelia is wary of the threat Griet poses to her family, especially fearing the attention her father is

Girl With A Pearl Earring Essay

  • 1. Pearl Earring Griet FILM STUDY WORKSHEET 1.In the film "The girl with the pearl earring" by Peter Webber it's about a young girl named Griet who is hired by the Vermeer's family to be the maid in the city of Dealft, Holland in 1655. The film takes an interesting turn when Griet began to work more as the personal assistant of Johannes Vermeer than as the household maid. Griet experimented admiration from Johannes and even some other feeling that involve passion, though from a very beginning she was dating the butcher's town. Johannes paint Griet due the insistence of Van Rujiven and use his wife's earrings for his masterpiece. The film comes to an end when Catherina driven by jealousy fired Griet who received from Johannes the pearl earrings she used...show more content... An ideological factor (which can also be an economical factor) of the film is that a maid should not be treated with the same respect as the owners of the house in which she serves. This is due to the time in which the movie is located and because it was though that people who had not the same economical range as rich ones were less than them. 9.We can learn from the film "The girl with a pearl earring" that the passion for art can make people felt in love between them (in this case Griet and Johannes) despites not having more in common and can make them understand each other because of this "passion". Also that the arrival of a new member in a family (in this case a maid) can cause problems such as jealousy. 10.In my opinion, a movie can help you understand better the historical events because when you read them in a book you are able to get information but you are not able to see the facts as they passed with your own eyes as you can do in a movie. Moreover, it is much easier to understand a movie than a book according to most of the people, but despites this, it is true that not everything that happens in a movie may be true because the directors are driven by what may be more interesting for viewers to see that what actually happened and that's why most of the people prefer to see a book if they want the reliably Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Girl With A Pearl Earring Analysis Girl with a Pearl Earring The painting I chose was Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, one of Vermeer's most famous paintings (Figure 1). Girl with a Pearl Earring was painted in 1665. It is housed in Mauritshuis at The Hauge in South Holland. The dimensions are 17.5 inches by 15 inches. The medium was oil on canvas. This piece of art is representational. From the museum's website, the painting as not a portrait, "...but a 'tronie' – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear. It was made in October of 2013 by New England cartoonist Mark Parisi. In the cartoon, the girl has multiple piercings throughout her face instead of just the one in her earlobe. In the 21st century, it isn't uncommon to see people in America with multiple piercings throughout their faces and this is pointing out just that– the 17th century and their piercings are very different from the piercings in the 21st century. Reproduction This reproduction is an advertisement for an Italian textile company called Zucchi Basetti. The advertisement features the painting but instead of the turban on her head, she has a blue bath towel, that is a picture not painted, wrapped around. There is text on the poster that says "Puro Cotone Su Tera" which translates to "Pure Cotton on Canvas". The date or placement of this advertisement is unknown. This is a clever reproduction in my eyes– the text stating that it's cotton– like the towel she has on her head– on canvas– which is what paintings usually are painted on. The text on the advertisement is very small, but I believe it's because the company wanted to showcase the girl and the towel on top of her Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Analysis Of ' The Girl With The Pearl Earring ' Artists and warriors have more in common than most people realize. An artist is characterized as a person who sees things in a different perspective, someone who can take anything and make it beautiful, an artist is a visionary of the world and things around them. Warriors are the people that fight in the battle of right and wrong;, they step on to a battlefield and turn it into a symbol of peace., a warrior has a vision of a better world and never stop fighting for it. Artists and warriors may seem different, but they have more in common than we imagine. An artist is programmed to look at things in different and new ways. In The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Johannes Vermeer the famed artist, asks Griet his young maid to look up at the sky. He asks her "What color do you see?" She without really thinking about it says "blue." Then he doesn't say anything, while she goes on to tell him all the colors she sees, like gray, yellow, etc. She sees things in the way that he does, in a different perspective that an average person may not look at it in that way. She relates to him in a way no one else can, they share a unique perspective that not many can say they have. Not only can artists look at things in a more detailed and interesting way, they also have a way of making things beautiful and reaching for their true beauty and importance. When I think of an artist I think of a bowl of fruit., While when not many can look at a bowl of ordinary fruit and call it beautiful, but an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Girl Pearl Earring Girl with a Pearl Earring is a fictional book that is based off of the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring. It gives the painting a background story and a makes up personas for Vermeer and the model in the photo. The Girl with a Pearl Earring is a very historical painting and is sometimes referred to as the Dutch Mona Lisa. It is very well known for highlighting the artistic achievements of the Dutch Golden Age. This book is an interesting interpretation on the backstory of the painting; it also gives insight on the time period and the artistic style of the Dutch Golden Age. After Griet's father went blind she is forced to get a job to support her family. She is hired as a maid by the famous artist Johannes Vermeer and his wife Catharina. Griet eventually develops an unlikely friendship with Johannes. He asks her to clean his studio that no one else is even allowed to enter. Johannes asks Griet to run special chores for him, such as getting him his paints, which he normally did by himself. He also has her grind and makes the paints for his art pieces. Catharina would get jealous that Griet gets to spend more time with her husband than she does so...show more content... The most interesting thing I learned from it was how they made paint back in 1600s. They grinded up different substances into a paste and made paint out of those. Ultramarine was one of the most difficult shades of paint to make "the process of extracting a pure blue from the stone so difficult, that he worked with it himself"(180). This shows how important the painting of the girl with a pearl earing is, because a good portion of the painting is done with blue paint. The author does discuss historical events that are happening around the time period that this painting was painted. The plague is a somewhat serious threat in the book. Griet's little sister Agnes dies because of the plague. Pieter informed Griet that Angus was infected "She is very Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Name Professor Course Date Comparison of the Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mona Lisa The Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mona Lisa are the two most famous portraits ever painted (Courtauld 36). The girl with a pearl earring follows the Mona Lisa painting, which is considered as the most famous painting. The girl with a pearl earring, by Johannes Vermeer, and the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci were created during the same historical time. Historians believe that Leonardo da Vinci created his art piece between 1503 and 1506. The girl with a pearl earring was created in 1665. The masterpieces were both created using oil. The medium for the girl with a pearl earring was oil and canvas while Mona Lisa was created using oil and wood. They were both from the genre of portrait art. The two portraits are associated with mysteries that have baffled analysts and historians for many years. First, the identity of the women was vastly unknown. The exact identity of the woman in the Mona Lisa has remained a mystery. While searching for answers, historians sought to know the time when the portrait was created. According to them, the portrait must have been created when Francesco Del Giocondo and his wife purchased a house in 1503 or during the birth of their son in 1502. Thus, some analysts conclude that the portrait was dedicated to the wife of Francesco Del Giocondo. The nature of clothing often backs the argument. The gown and scarf represented an aristocratic status. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Mona Lisa and The Girl with The Pearl Earring are two paintings that say a lot without out even speaking. From the slight smirk of secrecy to the cut eyes of urgency these two paintings have kept society guessing about their true meaning and what they stood for in the artistry realm. The Girl with The Pearl earring and the Mona Lisa display an array of differences and similarities that are pretty evident to the human eye. The Mona Lisa was painted in 1503 through 1507 but was never finished by Leonardo Da Vinci in Florence, Italy. Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa using oil paint on a wood panel as his canvas. The style that Da Vinci created is known as sfumato. Sfumato means that there are no harsh outline and the areas blend into...show more content... He paints the Mona Lisa with eyes that vocalize that "I have a secret that will take you a life time to figure out". With the addition to her smile which has a light smirk to that also says "and I'm not going to tell you". I believe that the best thing about women is we all possess the feel and look of secrecy and modesty from the stigma of innocence that is placed upon women. Da Vinci also communicates a sense of calmness and wisdom as if he painted her right as she has completed what she was put on this earth to do, this feeling I also associate with those that are up in age or the elders of the community. The Girl with The Pearl Earring was created by Johannes Vermeer in 1665 through 1667 in Mauritchius, The Hague. The portrait was painted on regular canvas using oil paints. The painting was created during the Dutch realism movement, during this time the spanning of the seventeenth century was in full swing during the later time of the eighty year war for Dutch independence. The painting was a part of a collection of Dutch art that portrays the idealized woman of that era, subservient docile attitude the homemaker or even Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The vast majority concur that the High Renaissance started in the 1490 's, with Leonardo 's "The Last Supper" and finished in 1527 with the sacking of Rome by the troops of King of France, Charles V. The High Renaissance time frame was a period of exceptional creative generation in Italy having the best–known cases of Italian Renaissance painting got from the three surely understood Italian specialists, for example, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. • 8. Analysis Of Girl With A Pearl Earring I.The novel's genre is Historical Fiction, the author wrote a fictitious story behind Johannes Vermeer's painting. The significance of the title is very big because it displays the main idea of the book and what the author previously wrote about, this book is based off of the painting, Girl with a pearl Earring. The main idea of the story is to help others imagine the life of the girl in the painting because in reality, we don't know much about the girl in the painting. In this book, the author sees her as Griet, a sixteen–year–old girl that is forced to work as a maid for the Vermeer's due to her family's poor economic status. She's very hardworking and independent, but she soon becomes Johannes' assistant, and helps him in his studio. The two form a bit of a platonic relationship; Griet becomes attracted to his mysterious ways, and is willing to pose for him, even though she knew there were consequences. This book's content makes me think that everybody interested in art and in the story behind the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring will read this book, primarily the "ideal" audience of this book is young adults, as well as adults. II.The protagonist is Griet, she's portrayed as modest, innocent, intelligent, discrete and attentive. She's modest and discrete because she tries her best to not disturb the peace of the household at first, she is told that she isn't like "other maids" because she doesn't gossip much, or doesn't steal anything from the house. • 9. The movie and the novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring, were almost as fascinating as the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's paintings. I enjoyed both the movie and the novel very much. I think that it was a marvelous idea to assign this summer reading book for art class. Tracy Chevalier did not only put an amazing plot into this book she also made sure that Vermeer gave us art lessons throughout the book. I love art, but never had a chance to take lessons so this gave me an opportunity to learn a few things. Also, especially admire the time period that this book was set in. The novel and the movie were based on the same story, but in some ways they were very distinct. Given the assignment to compare and contrast the two things I have to admit that it was easier to contrast. There were a few obvious differences, but also a lot of little ones that were harder to notice. The big difference was that the book was much more precise than the movie. There were lots of scenes that were not shown in the movie that were written in the book. The first big missing scene that I noticed was the...show more content... For example, in the movie Griet was an only child. In the book Griet had an older brother and a younger sister. There were also lots of general things that were similar about the movie and the book. The characters acted and looked in the movie exactly like they were described in the book. Also, in the book Griet visited her parents on Sundays and most of the visits were described. In the movie we hardly saw the parents and she didn't visit them. There were also lots of missing scenes with Pieter which made getting to know him more difficult. I think that most of the changes made in the movie were because they needed the movie to be shorter and they wanted to focus the plot more on Greit, Vermeer, Van Ruijven, Catharina and less on the other insignificant characters and events in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay about Girl with a Pearl Earring In the novel Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, Griet faces many challenges which causes her identity to change. Though Griet starts out as an innocent maid who has to follow orders, she starts developing her own opinion and the ability to make decisions. Griet changes from an household servant to having the courage to share her opinion to a mature lady, capable of making her own decisions. Many factors contribute to the change in Griet's identity, but the main factor is Vermeer, her master. At first, Griet is viewed as an innocent girl, who is compelled to work as an maid due to her father's incapability to provide for her family. She does not want to leave her family and go to an unknown place, but she has to; in order...show more content... This supports Griet's change in identity, form being too scared to speaking her mind to having the courage to give her opinion to her master. Near the end, Griet's identity has gone through the process of a young maid to a mature lady. At first, Griet's opinion held no importance. She does not have a say in anything. This is evident when she says, " ' What would I think, madam?'"(157). Griet has certainly developed an opinion, but not the courage to speak it in front of others. She is aware of her status as a maid. This changes throughout the course of the novel. Griet does develop the courage to take the decision of her life as well as carry it out. " 'I did not pick up the knife. I turned and walked from the room'"(215). This quote illustrates Griet's ability to make and carry out decisions. She is not going to tolerate any wrong accusations, and she has learned to take a stand for herself. This change occurs due to Vermeer and his art. Somewhere in between, Griet realizes that she has had enough, and she's not going to let anyone come and accuse her of doing something she didn't do. Vermeer and his paintings made Griet feel that she does hold importance, and no one has the right to accuse her wrongfully. Therefore, Griet's identity undergoes a lot of changes throughout the novel. First, she is maid who is duty– bound to work in an unknown place due to her family's needs'. As the book continues, she starts developing her opinion as well as Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Here are two paintings showcasing the beauty of women by two great artist. One is called "Girl with Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer a Dutch artist and painted on 1665. The other is "Mona Lisa" painted by Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. In both painting, the women gives a different meaning on their concept of beauty, but both are appealing subject to see on a canvas. The photography in the film is very sensuous, showing the golden age of Dutch culture. The pictures in the photography contain fantastic colour and scale, crowded with plentiful costumes and magnificent architecture. This photographic art keeps the eyes engaged. • 13. Johannes Veermeer Accomplishments Very little is known about Johannes Vermeer. He was exclusively devoted to the arts. Due to his elusiveness, Thore Burger named him "The Sphinx of Delft" ("Biography of"). Vermeer was an artist during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of wealth for the Netherlands. Many outbreaks of the plague had come and gone, but things were finally returning to what they were like before it began. Trade flourished through the East India Company. The arts became popular, and artists were gaining wealth and fame. Many art guilds were formed where artists could communicate with other artists in their community. Johannes Vermeer's paintings deeply impacted the Dutch Golden Age. Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier is a fictional story told from the point of view of Griet, a maid in the Vermeer household in Delft, Netherlands. Griet is a fictional muse that Chevalier created for Vermeer's painting The Girl With a Pearl Earring. Griet shows through her eyes how Johannes Vermeer began his paintings, the painting process, and how he ended them. The Netherlands was thriving during the time Vermeer lived, the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer was an influential artist who contributed to the Netherland's Golden Age. • 14. Girl With A Pearl Earring Analysis While reading the book, Girl With a Pearl Earring, it is hard not to compare life during that time period to today's society and culture. The first major difference is obviously the divide in religion. An example of this is on page 136 when Griet's mother made a statement about the master's paintings. She said, "I think his paintings are not good for the soul". She was clearly offended because in her mind Greit's master's paintings were Catholic. I could not imagine what she would think about today's society. Region is almost completely separate from work, school and much of life. During the book, region was everything to people. Today it is a topic, like politics, people avoid due to conflicts. Another big difference in our society and Griets Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It does not take long before Griet begins to feel she has "two families now and they must not mix" As Griet's ties with her family begin to weaken, so too, do her moral convictions. Griet is so blinded by her infatuation with Vermeer that she becomes his servant not on just a domestic, but an emotional level as well. She sacrifices her morals on many occasions and does not remain true to herself– "I did whatever he asked of me". We see the truth in Van Leeuwenhoek's warning that the "women in his paintings–he traps them in his world," as it is only with Vermeer that Griet loses control. When she was with Pieter she would "not let him do all he wanted", but for Vermeer she pierces her ears, parts her lips, reveals her hair and is in all sense a "ruined" woman. Not only does Vermeer become the focus for Griet's emergent sexuality, he also serves to expand her mind and perspective on life. Teaching her that there is "little pure white in clouds", Griet realises that the world is not always as it seems. Similarly, Griet's religious prejudices instilled in her by her family and society are quelled by Vermeer who teaches her that "Its not the painting that is catholic or ProtestantВ…but the people who look at it, and what they expect to see".
