Portfolio of Excellence

 1. 1. You are invited:
This coming fall semester,
to Excel!
Bridgewater State University
Portfolio of Excellence
New Student Mentoring Program
2. 2.
 3. 3. What is Portfolio of Excellence?

Portfolio of Excellence (POE) is a new student mentoring program.
 4. 4. POE willallow you to make good choicesthat will set you up for successboth academically and personally during your college experience.

What is Portfolio of Excellence?

POE helps students to think & learn about the relationship between the experiences you choose to have now, in college, and

the life you want to have after you graduate.

You’ll have a portfolio of “stuff” you can use to start a solid resume and demonstrate your talentsto future employers or graduate schools.

Why be Excellent?
There are a lot of things you could do as a student, but, the question is:
What will you decide to do?
And how do you decide?
5. 5. Why be Excellent?
Too frequently, we hear graduates say:
“I have nothing to put on my resume,” or
“I wish I had gotten involved sooner”
or, perhaps worst of all,
“I wish I had known about that opportunity before my last semester I graduated.”
POE is designed so that you never have to think or say any of those things.
6. 6.
 7. 7. What can POE do for me?

Some of the things this program will help you to do would be:

Things that you would want and plan to do anyway
(get a 3.0 for the fall semester)
8. 8. What can POE do for me?

It might get you to do things you should do but maybe wouldn’t because it seems like a hassle

(get academic help for a tough class before it becomes a crisis, or
get an on campus job)
9. 9. What can POE do for me?

It might also get you to do things you’d want to do if you could figure out how to make the time

(play intramural soccer, volunteer to help at Special Olympics, try out for jazz band)
10. 10. What can POE do for me?

POE will help you to take advantage of things that, without this program, you might not know even existed on this campus

(a bible study group, the Physics club, travel to Belize,
join a Fraternity or Sorority)
11. 11. POE Student Thoughts:
“P.O.E. was one of the first things I got involved with at BSC. This opened so many opportunities for me and I will be eternally grateful for that.”
~Tracey Hill, Sophomore & Commuter Student~
“My P.O.E. faculty and peer mentors helped me transition to freshman year, and I don’t know how I would have managed without them.
They were always there if I had any questions and they were even there one day when I just needed to go to their office and cry.”
~Female Freshmen & Commuter Student~
12. 12.
 13. 13. Our POE Mentors Say:
“POE is a great launching pad for students who need a little guidance coming into college because we don't tell students what to do, we only provide them with the resources they'll need and the student makes all the decisions, which is why they become so successful by the end of the program.”
~POE Mentor, Resident Student~
“By the end of the school year, they had become involved in student organizations, made Dean's List, and had a huge group of friends.”
~POE Mentor, Commuter Student~
“POE helped the incoming students to settle into a comfortable role at college and hit their stride to becoming successful.”
~POE Mentor, Resident Student~
14. 14. Excellent Goals
FACT: POE will…

Assist students to identify their academic, personal and career goals

with guidance from a
faculty or staff
mentor.
20. 20. Meeting and talking with all these folks, so that you can write and reflect on your options for participating in campus life and working towards academic success.

We Hope…

We hope POE will help you be more efficient and adventurous about your first few semesters at Bridgewater State.

We Hope…

We hope that the chance to talk with faculty and staff who know the campus and other students at BSC who have had highly successful college experiences, will help you make good choices about how you spend your time at Bridgewater.

We Hope…

We hope to help you make the choices that will contribute to the kind of college career you want to have while you are here and

the kind of life you want to have after you graduate.
21. 21. What kind of time commitment?

How often you meet as a group will depend on how much your group likes to meet.
 22. 22. You will do a lot of “meeting” online through blogs and your POE portfolio.
 23. 23. This program is not designed to cause you more work!

 24. 24. We Know…

We know that most Bridgewater students work a lot of hours and in general lead very busy lives.

We Know…

We also know this: sometimes students are so wrapped up in their part time jobs and hectic lives that they fail to really do much more than show up for class in their four years.

…this is where POE can help!
25. 25. What can POE do for me?

You will keep track of your activities by documenting them through the college’s Involvement Network (IN Network).
 26. 26. Your goal-setting, reflections, outstanding student work and writing and whatever else you want to collect will be housed electronically in your own special POE website.

How excellent is POE?

You will have access to your portfolio for your entire college career and after you graduate for use at any time to help you apply for internships while you are in school, perhaps for use in a graduate school application, or as part of your materials as you apply to a first job after college.
 27. 27. So, yes,it really is that excellent!!

 28. 28. Am I really excellent enough for a program called Portfolios of Excellence?
The folks that put this program together feel relatively certain that you are excellent enough, and we’ve tried to design a program to help show you not only how excellent you are, but how excellent you can be.
29. 29. Do you want to be excellent? Here is how to sign up:

Show your interest in becoming Excellent:

Please fill out an interest form!
30. 30. Still want to be excellent? Here is how to apply:

PLEASE NOTE: We will only be able to work with about 60 students this year. An application will be sent to you, via e-mail, after orientation for you to apply!
 31. 31. Once accepted, we’ll group students together, assign you a faculty/staff mentor, and contact you with that information as well as when your first POE meeting will be held during the fall semester.
