What is HIV/AIDS? <ul><li>HIV is an acronym for Human Immunodeficiency Virus </li></ul><ul><li>HIV is the known cause of AIDS, which is an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome </li></ul><ul><li>HIV attacks the body’s immune system by destroying essential cells that help the body fight and destroy invading germs </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>When HIV invades the body to a point where one is ill with an infection that would normally be fought by the body’s immune system coupled with a low count of essential cells involved in fighting immunity, a person is declared to have AIDS </li></ul>

Where did HIV/AIDS come from? <ul><li>There are many different schools of thought </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Rhesus monkeys </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Eating infected animal meat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Biological or germ warfare </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Nutritional deficiency (impossible) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Polio vaccine (defunct) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>HIV/AIDS is a myth (impossible) </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Science can’t agree on the origins of the virus because: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The illness does not seem animal or human </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>It causes the body to turn on its own immunity, and that is unnatural </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The ramifications which exist for believing in an HIV/AIDS conspiracy </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. How HIV/AIDS is spread <ul><li>Direct blood to blood contact with an infected person </li></ul><ul><li>Sharing of drug needles </li></ul><ul><li>Sexual contact </li></ul><ul><li>Pregnancy and after-birth fluids </li></ul><ul><li>Tainted blood transfusions </li></ul>

How HIV/AIDS is NOT spread <ul><li>Bug bites </li></ul><ul><li>Shaking hands, hugging, or kissing </li></ul><ul><li>Touching </li></ul><ul><li>Sharing food or drink </li></ul><ul><li>Breathing the same air </li></ul><ul><li>Sitting next to or in the same seat as an infected person </li></ul><ul><li>Holding hands </li></ul><ul><li>Talking </li></ul><ul><li>Using the same phone </li></ul><ul><li>Sharing a cup, utensils, a sink, a toilet, a brush, or a water fountain </li></ul><ul><li>Loving, caring about, or being concerned for an infected person </li></ul>

How many people have died from HIV/AIDS? <ul><li>HIV/AIDS is a global pandemic (worldwide) </li></ul><ul><li>HIV/AIDS is present in nearly every country in the world, if not in every country </li></ul><ul><li>More than 25 million deaths worldwide </li></ul><ul><li>More than 11 million orphans created </li></ul>

How many people have HIV/AIDS? <ul><li>More than 1 million people in the US </li></ul><ul><li>400,000 new cases each year </li></ul><ul><li>More than 33 million cases reported worldwide with a potential of more than 36 million cases worldwide </li></ul><ul><li>In many countries, HIV/AIDS cases are quickly on the rise </li></ul>

Who has HIV/AIDS? <ul><li>Fastest growing population in the US is young, heterosexual, African-American women aged 18-35 </li></ul><ul><li>Contracting the virus from unfaithful partners living on the “down-lo” (homosexual or bisexual men who front as heterosexuals and live active homosexual or bisexual lives in secret) </li></ul>
  12. 12. <ul><li>Africa is the continent most damaged by HIV/AIDS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>150 people die per day from HIV/AIDS in Uganda </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>6 African nations have HIV/AIDS populations higher than 15% of the population </li></ul></ul><ul><li>India is the nation where HIV/AIDS is growing the fastest </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Monogamous, married women who contract the illness from unfaithful husbands </li></ul></ul>

How to tell if one has HIV/AIDS <ul><li>HIV/AIDS is determined by a blood test administered by a doctor </li></ul><ul><li>There are many symptoms but HIV/AIDS is not diagnosed symptomatically </li></ul><ul><li>If you suspect you have been infected with HIV/AIDS, consult your doctor or local health clinic for an HIV test </li></ul>

HIV/AIDS prevention <ul><li>Do not have sexual contact with an infected person </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Latex condoms can prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>It is best and safest to avoid all sexual contact with someone you know is infected with HIV/AIDS </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have good communication in a relationship, especially on sexual matters </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If there is a question about sexual history, request your partner be tested and get tested yourself </li></ul></ul>
  15. 15. <ul><li>Do not share drug needles </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Better yet, don’t use drugs! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>HIV/AIDS is highly transmittable through the sharing of dirty needles </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Drugs don’t solve problems and obviously supply new problems </li></ul></ul>
  16. 16. <ul><li>Do not handle blood or body fluids of an infected person without proper protection </li></ul><ul><ul><li>When handling any blood or body fluids, use latex gloves </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Take medical precautions for clean-up </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These precautions create safety for any persons involved in the process </li></ul></ul>
