Political cont. <ul><li>Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette-palace was attacked by Parisians, was executed like a normal criminal </li></ul><ul><li>Jacobins-wanted a centralized gov’t, Paris as a capital, & gov’t control of economy </li></ul><ul><li>Maximilien Robespierre-ran committee of public safety, executed w/ guillotine on 7/27/1794 (the 9 th of Thermidor) </li></ul><ul><li>Democratic republic-national convention, committee of public safety </li></ul><ul><li>Wars with Austria, Prussia, Holland, Spain & Great Britain . </li></ul>

Social Groups <ul><li>All French people belonged to one of the three estates. </li></ul><ul><li>Estate- A social system which determines a person’s legal rights and status. </li></ul><ul><li>The First Estate- Only 1% of the population was included, the Catholic clergy formed the first estate. They were tax exempt. </li></ul><ul><li>The Second Estate- The nobility formed 2% of the population, they were tax exempt.They received high positions in the Church, government, and in the army. </li></ul><ul><li>The Third Estate- 97% of the population made this the largest social group. Peasants, artisans, as well as members of the bourgeoisie, belonged to the Third Estate. They were forced to pay all the taxes. </li></ul>

Continued…….. <ul><li>Louis summoned the Estates-General after dealing with economic problems. </li></ul><ul><li>The Estates- General, which had not met since 1614, was made up of delegates representing each estate. </li></ul><ul><li>Knowing that the first and second estate might team up, the third estate called for individual votes. </li></ul><ul><li>As a result, they called themselves the National Assembly and met at a nearby tennis court. Here the members took an oath promising not to disband until they wrote a constitution known as the Tennis Court Oath. </li></ul>
  7. 7. The Reign Of Terror <ul><li>Republic Of Virtue- The Committee opened new schools and promoted the idea of universal elementary education. </li></ul>
