As we continue to work our way through the healthcare industry, we have constantly recognized the irony of its workers often failing to keep up with their personal health. This irony is mainly due to the fact that healthcare workers have serious responsibilities, which often get the best of them. However, we have witnessed several healthcare workers who have been successfully maintaining healthy lifestyle, without compromising their productivity at work. How do they do that, you ask? In light of October being the Healthy Workplace Month, we decided to write about the matter in detail. This article outlines the top ten ways a healthcare worker can follow and maintain a healthy lifestyle while being active at work. For our side of things, we try our best to provide solutions that help lighten the workload of healthcare workers so they can concentrate on tasks that matter the most, for instance their health, as well as, their patients’.

Try Some Desk Exercises It may seem hard to incorporate going to the gym and staying fit while juggling a busy work schedule. However, it is a lot easier to incorporate a healthy lifestyle without compromising your productivity at work. For instance, you can replace your chair with an exercise ball. This will help you proper your spine alignment, causes you to frequently change positions which helps avoid damages caused by prolonged sitting in the same position. Another way to incorporate exercises at work is to have a walking desk or a treadmill desk. This easy change will not only help you get on your feet, but will also help you stay active on a regular basis.

Drink 10 Glasses of Water This one is a no brainer. It is vital to drink 10 glasses of water every day. This can be easily achieved if you place a 16oz bottle or jug of water on your desk with an hourly reminder set on your computer or cell phone to alert you of drinking a glass. Water has many benefits, one of the most beneficial being that is releases stress and keeps your body hydrated.

Bring Your Own Lunch to Work Instead of eating out each day for lunch while at work, it is quite beneficial both for your bank account and body if you brought lunch from home. It may seem to be a daunting task to prepare lunch everyday, but it doesn’t have to be. Take some time out on Sundays to prepare a week’s worth of food. Pack them in brown bags or zip locks and bring each pack to work. Ideal lunches that you can pack for work would be turkey and avocado sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, or ham and swiss cheese sandwich.

Keep WalkingIn order to stay healthy, it is vital for you to keep moving instead of staying stationary for long periods of time. An easy way to incorporate this is by having walking meetings, adapting a treadmill desk, or going for walks while on a lunch break. Walking for as little as 20 minutes a day can have a significant impact your health and can reduce various possibilities of heart diseases.

Takecare Of Your Neck One of the most neglected part of your body is your neck. Many people completely disregard their necks and fail to properly care about it. Since most of the jobs require sitting on desks and staring at computer screens, this may cause our necks immense strains, resulting in neck pains which may later lead to elevation in stress levels. Therefore, it is a good practice to take a break from the desk and give your neck frequent breaks in between tasks.

Take Frequent BreaksThis advice reflects the one mentioned above, it is very important to take frequent short breaks in between your tasks or meetings to help give your body a chance to recover from the stress it has been facing through out the day. This helps maintain balance and helps you stay active through out the day.

Limit Caffeine Intake Despite the myth that caffeine intake helps awaken the mind and leads you to remain productive through out the day, immense amount of coffee intakes can cause headaches, fatigues and elevate stress. It is recommended that an average person should not have more than 2 cups a day and if you maintain a healthy schedule, like the ones mentioned above, you wouldn’t want to resort to caffeine intakes as your body would be naturally revitalized and active.

Be Self-awareThis advice is targeted at the spiritual level, however, its affects are not limited at just that. A person who is self-aware realizes their self-capacity and do not drain themselves out trying to achieve the unachievable. They recognize their weaknesses and strengths, and then adjust their tasks accordingly. Many people who fail to concentrate on this practice usually burn themselves out by overestimating their capabilities or what the tasks require of them. Self-awareness helps you stay in sync with yourself and helps you stay focused for longer.

Vacations Are Important This is probably one of the most unpopular advice in our work industry. Many people fail to take vacations as they are entirely focused on their work, trying to achieve as many tasks as possible. However, neglecting yourself some relaxing time, and a change of venue, causes burn outs, leading to unproductivity and elevation in stress levels. Thus, if you want to remain focused on work and want to achieve more than you usually do, it would be helpful to take that vacation to the Bahamas, feed your soul and inspire your mind, so that when you get back you are refreshed and can tackle your job with a fresh perspective.

Manage Stress Properly All the above advices resort down to this simple one: manage stress properly. No human being can manage productivity while struggling with high levels of stress. Exercises, vacations and healthy diet all help you manage stress better and cause you to focus on tasks that matter, without leading you to burn outs.
