  2. 2. INTRODUCTION • Vespa is an Italian brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio. • The name means wasp in Italian. • Head quarters: Pontedera, Italy • Founded on 23rd April 1936. • Type of company :Subsidiary Piaggio MP5 "Paperino", the initial Piaggio prototype
  3. 3. HISTORY • Founded on 23 rd April 1946 in Florence. • Designer and founder Corradino D'Ascanio • The Vespa has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy—to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio. • Vespa was made famous by the 1952 Hollywood blockbuster Roman Holiday.
  4. 4. • In 1960s, Piaggio first licensed the production of Vespa scooters in India to Bajaj Auto. • Another Vespa partner in India was that of LML Motors beginning as a joint-venture with Piaggio in 1983. • In the 2012 Auto Expo held in New Delhi, the iconic Vespa re-entered the Indian Market.

  7. 7. VESPA INDIA • Piaggio first licensed the production of Vespa scooters in India to Bajaj Auto in the 1960s. In 1971, Piaggio's license was not renewed as a part of Indira Gandhi's privatization programs. After the collaboration ended, Bajaj continued to produce scooters based on the Vespa design, namely the Chetak. • Another Vespa partner in India was that of LML Motors. Beginning as a joint-venture with Piaggio in 1983, LML, in addition to being a large parts supplier for Piaggio, produced the P-Series scooters for the Indian market.
  8. 8. • In 1999, after protracted dispute with Piaggio, LML bought back Piaggio's stake in the company and the partnership ceased. LML continues to produce (and also exports) the P-Series variant known as the Stella in the U.S. market and by other names in different markets. • In the 2012 Auto Expo held in New Delhi, the iconic Vespa re-entered the Indian Market. Piaggio unveiled its range of scooters at the Expo. This became the first such venture of Piaggio in India without a local partner.

  10. 10. FUTURE PLANS • Piaggio Vehicles has finally revealed their future strategy for the Indian market and also about the different models they are going to bring in future. The largest European scooter maker said that it will be investing close to 20 million Euros in the Indian market for expansion of its manufacturing facilities. The company recently launched its iconic scooter, the Vespa LX125 in the Indian market. • Roberto Colaninno, Piaggio Group Chairman and Chief Executive said that the investment in its Baramati plant is a part of their strategic plan in which India is a significant destination in the company’s growth trajectory. A total investment of close to 50 million Euros has been planned for the Indian market out of which 30 million has already been invested in the Baramati plant. The remaining 20 million Euros will be invested in doubling the capacity to 3 lakh units by mid-2013.
  11. 11. • Going forward, Piaggio is looking at bringing in more models in the scooter and motorcycle segment to take advantage of the growing 2 wheeler demand. It is also looking at possibilities of launching 3-4 wheeled LCVs. The Indian facility will also be producing 1000 and above cc engines for the Indian and European markets. For this, Piaggio has started to import its superbikes from Italy and has sold 25 models till date. • The rumors in the web are floating that, Italian auto major Piaggio is all set to expand its business in India with wide range of upcoming scooters such as Vespa LXS125, Fly 125, Vespa S150 and Typhoon 150.
