Install Software Applications <ul><li>This is different to Use Software Applications (which refers to using applications at work) </li></ul><ul><li>Limit yourself to short sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>Use SPECIFIC industry keywords </li></ul><ul><li>Give generic, specific examples </li></ul>
  3. 3. Know the categories <ul><li>The HSC places software applications into set categories - you need to USE these terms to get marks! </li></ul><ul><li>Spreadsheets , Word Processing, Database and Desktop Publishing - the 4 major ‘application’ categories </li></ul>
  4. 4. Know the categories <ul><li>Utility Applications </li></ul><ul><li>Drivers </li></ul><ul><li>Operating Systems and Network Operating Systems </li></ul><ul><li>You need to know how to classify a range of applications into these, and SHOW that you know this. </li></ul>

Most year 7s year will tell you something like this! </li></ul>

They want to see if you can CLASSIFY and talk about a SPECIFIC type of software </li></ul><ul><li>If you can’t define the term ‘software application’ then this is going to be much harder. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Showing Off <ul><li>Software that is written and designed to perform specific tasks for a person, organisation or processing task. Usually provided to extend the functionality of hardware devices or to maintain the computer in some way. Typical ‘utility’ applications will allow the user to back-up data to optical storage media such as a CD burner or to manage a printer to self-clean or print a test page. </li></ul>
  10. 10. About Software <ul><li>Define the term software version </li></ul><ul><li>A version is a checkpoint at which a particular piece of software varies from its previous edition. </li></ul><ul><li>Software is often modified over time to improve performance or extend functionality </li></ul>
  11. 11. Extended Questions <ul><li>Compare and contrast a typical installation and a custom installation of a software package. </li></ul><ul><li>Typically a 3 mark question type. They will give you two similar concepts. </li></ul><ul><li>Many candidates only pickup on the term installation and software and give a response ... </li></ul>

Compare and Contrast <ul><li>Identify things that are the same ... </li></ul><ul><li>Software Installation, core features etc., </li></ul><ul><li>Things that are different ... </li></ul><ul><li>add in modules, personalisation, omitting elements (such as tutorials). </li></ul><ul><li>Do not make a ‘judgement’ on which is better. </li></ul>
