This report is based on official deals made last year and the data disclosed by VCs. Unlisted investments are not included in this report’s scope. Basic data used in the 2017 Startup Investment Trends in Korea 1. Investments and M&A deals in 2017: 454 cases (investment - 425, M&A - 29) 2. Startups with investments secured in 2017 (Investee Co.): 387 companies (fully disclosed - 224, partially disclosed - 18, non-disclosed - 145) 3. Companies participating in investments in 2017: 251 companies (based on businesses with their names disclosed) * Definition of startup: "A company with a business model that is expected to grow rapidly based on new ideas or technologies. It may be a company that is listed on the stock market or has not yet merged into a large company." (Part of this definition was borrowed from the definition of startup alliance.) * For companies that received investments on 2 or more occasions during the given year, the amount of investments was calculated based on the total cumulative investment amount (partial disclosure included). * The investment scale graph was calculated solely based on the investments made into 242 startups which have either fully or partially disclosed their amounts. * The age (history) of a business was determined as of December 2017. * For joint investments, only the number of investments cases and the total amount of investments were taken into consideration since the amounts of individual investments are generally not disclosed by co-investors. Startup Crowdfunding in 2017 • The total amount of investment raised by startups, excluding movies/performances/exhibitions, from the entire crowdfunding reached approximately $21M. The number of deals was 217, accounting for 77% of all crowdfunding deals. • Upon comparison between the 1st half and 2nd half of the year, the total number of deals slightly increased from 105 in the 1st half to 112 deals in the 2nd half. However, as the raised amount increased by 154% (from $8.3M to $12.7M), it is clear that the activity of general investors was increasing. • The success rate of equity-based crowdfunding for startups was 65%; the attraction point that led to most investments was the issuance of common stocks. Companies falling under the bracket of [1 year or longer but less than 2 years] accounted for the highest percentage at 26%, followed by the companies under the bracket of [3 years or longer but less than 4 years] at 19%. • Companies that had been in business [7 years or longer] represented a relatively small number of cases, but the investment amount was notably high compared to the number of investments. • Substantial investments were made in companies that showed rapid growth or promising potential despite having been in business for a relatively short time. 8PERCENT (less than 2 years but surging growth) has secured an investment amount of approximately $606K, and Gore Wind Power ([less than 1 year] in the field of renewable energy) obtained investment of $440K. It examines and delivers in-depth information concerning monthly investment trends during 2017, current investments by their size, current investments by business types and history, investor information, and annual M&A trends based on 425 investments in startups and 29 M&A deals publicly announced during the year of 2017. All basic data including the name of startups (investees), investors, investment volume, and time of investment is based on the information disclosed or presented by both investees and investors. The final figures were derived by Platum through analyzing monthly trends as well as the distribution and ratio of investments and applying comprehensive calculation methods and percent ratios. The industrial classification system was established based on the middle classification scheme adopted from the Korea Standard Industry Code (KSIC) by the Korea Venture Capital Association. In the course of classifying the business types of startups in accordance with the industrial classification system, the detailed business types of each startup was determined at the discretion of the Research Team at Platum based on the primary business type of each investee.
