Every day, we consume beverages and water in plastic bottles, rarely knowing how much harm it is doing to our body. We rarely think much about the recent reports and facts about the plastic bottles and the ill-effects that it can cause to the human body.
Plastic: A Material so Useful and yet so Dangerous
1. Plastic menace: the enemy of the future
generation
Plastic is a versatile material and is lightweight & durable too. These
qualities help make the plastic last long. But the bad news is that it
cannot be destroyed completely, and this has caused the main problem.
People from across the globe use plastic for everything, and throw it
away. The plastic litters get accumulated in water bodies, mixes with
2. water and releases toxins. While throwing plastic bottles
environmental impact is never kept in mind, which causes the
problem.
There are a number of problems when one throws plastic bottles and
plastic straws walking by the beach. People visit beaches and other
tourist places only to throw food packets and PET bottles, which
makes the places dirty. Even if the dustbins are available, no one
bothers to throw the litters in a dustbin. This causes increase in
garbage, especially a homogeneous mixture of litters where
biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes get mixed up and adds up
to the landfills.
When the plastic litters add up the landfills, it makes the soil poisonous
and barren. The area becomes good for no use. Moreover, these litters
get mixed up with the water bodies, making the nearby pond or lake
water poisonous. People living nearby drink the water or use the water
for many other purposes. This can cause several health related issues
like early onset of puberty, brain abnormalities, deformation of limbs of
the fetus and even cancer. Using plastic containers for cooking and
storing food can be equally harmful.
Plastic litter, when thrown randomly here and there, can be dangerous
for the birds and animals. They can mistake the plastic litters with food
and eat them up. Plastic is not digestible, so it stays in the gut for a
3. long time to release toxins that may result in the death of those birds
and animals. Vultures are now extinct because of the plastic pollution.
It is very dangerous when plastic enters into the food chain. It is scary
to watch how plastic litter is affecting the marine life. Most of the
animals die in the ocean due to plastic litters, and even the sharks and
big marine animals too cannot escape the wrath of plastic pollution.
Plastic litters, especially the straws and PET bottles that are designed
to use and throw, find its place in the seas and oceans.
Even if the plastic litter is burned, it can cause air pollution and severe
lung disease. Many people think that burning is the most reliable
solution when it comes to dispose non-biodegradable waste, but plastic
can be dangerous even if it is burned. It can release chemicals that can
cause severe lung and chest related problems. The urban lifestyle is
plastic-dependent, and this also contributes in manufacturing plastic
production that releases significant amount of polluting ingredients.
The entire generation is standing on the cliff where a little push can
diminish life on the earth. It is high time everyone must consider
replacing plastic with some other eco-friendly product. Plastic toys can
be replaced with woods, while kitchen essentials can be made of
stainless steel and brass. If we are not able to take holistic approach
towards life, in no time plastic will replace us too.
4. Recycling the plastic and making use of plastic containers and bottles
can be counted in taking a green step to save the environment. One
must replace plastic as early as possible; otherwise the consequences are
very dangerous. We’ll gift our future generation a life full of illness.
Plastic is not a menace until and unless it is used beyond the
recommended limits, but it is important to understand it well before we
pledge to stop plastic water bottle pollution.
