  2. 2. Matter  What is matter?  Matter is made up of atoms  What is an atom?  Atoms are tiny particles that make up everything  Basically, everything is made up of matter Matter exists in three major states;  Solid, liquid, and gas  The states of matter depend on how much energy its atoms have
  3. 3. Solid   Atoms with little energy move very slowly and create solids  Solids have a defined shapes and size  Atoms in a solid move very slowly and stay in one place  Example: ice
  4. 4. Liquid  When solid atoms are heated up they begin to move faster and form liquid Liquids have no defined shape, but they take on the shape of whatever they are in Atoms in liquid move faster and do not stay in one place Example: water
  5. 5. Gas  Gas atoms move the fastest When a liquid is heated up it turns into gas Gas has no defined shape or size Gas atoms have the most energy and so move quickly and rapidly Example: air
  6. 6. MovementTo watch how atoms move in the three different states of matter, click HERE
  7. 7. Melting  Matter changes states when heated up When a solid changes to a liquid thisis called Melting
  8. 8. Freezing  When a liquid changes to a solidthis is called freezing
  9. 9. Evaporation  When a liquid changes to a gasthis is called evaporation

Energy and matter have multiple forms and canbe changed from one form to another. As a basisfor understanding this concept: e. Students know matter has three forms: solid, liquid, and gas.
