Most of the weekly cruise nightsopened up on the May long weekendlocally; they were:Mississauga Classic Car Club’s Fridaynight cruise at East Side Mario’s, WinstonChurchill and Argentia starting May 17.Street Classics Cruise on Saturday,May 18 in the CTC parking lotQueensway and the East Mall, WestToronto.The real good news was the notificationthat the Thornhill Cruisers would beback in operation. They had lost theirBayview Glen location, and it lookedlike it was about to be a thing of the past.With lots of effort they were able to strikea deal and will be cruising to the CTCat 250 Silver Linden Drive (Bayview andHightech).If you want to spend every day at acruise, check out Old Autos. They havea very detailed list of weekly cruises inOntario, plus loads of one day eventsthroughout the cruising season.If cruises are not your cup of tea, thedrag strips have plowed off the snow andgotten their seasons started.In Ontario, Toronto MotorsportsPark in Cayuga, Grand Bend Motorplexin Grand Bend, ShannonvilleMotorsports Park in Shannonville andSt. Thomas Raceway Park in Sparta areall up and running a regular schedule.TMP, Grand Bend and Shannonvillealso have road courses where you canimprove your driving skills lapping thetrack. The car magazines of the daywere filled with tales of both Dodge andPlymouth’s successes on the drag strips andoval tracks. “The King” Richard Petty waswinning everything NASCAR, with hisSTP Dodge Chargers. Don was hooked.When time came to buy his first car,it was certainly going to be a Mopar. Hespent his early high school days behind thewheel of a 70 Plymouth Duster, with a 340engine. As his Duster aged, he moved to a73 Charger SE, filling the engine bay withthe hopped-up 340 from his Duster. Sincethen, he has never owned anything butMopars. Some think he has the pentastarlogo sewn on his jockey shorts.Time passed, as did a number of greatChrysler products. Don considered the1970 Dodge Charger R/T SE he ownedin the mid 80s to be his all-time favourite.But family, funds and available time, hadgotten in the way, so it too passed throughhis hands. But he now knew what he reallywanted, and would have again someday.The car you see on these pages was theresult of a two-year hunt for a restorableversion, finally locating one in Wisconsin.A deal was completed and the Hemi Or-ange Charger was whisked to Ontario.Along the way, it attracted attention andhigh fives, however, the most asked ques-tion was “Are you going to letter 01 on thedoors and a confederate flag on the roof?”Not the image Don had in mind.One man’s obsession with the Mopar MarqueStory By: Bob McJannett • Photos courtesy of Don LebeufDodgeDon
  6. 6. • Performance in Motion • 7During the drive home, he and his sup-portive and understanding wife formulatedtheir restoration plan. He would restore thiscar just as he would have ordered it fromthe dealer in 1970. Thus began the 8-yearrestoration where every nut and bolt onthe car was perfected. Fingers were scarred,knuckles busted and fingernails filled withgrease and dirt, but it was all worth it. Alongthe way, several performance modificationswere made to improve certain parts of thecar, but they are hidden and the car retainsits as-ordered livery. This car looks just theway a dealer would have delivered it.In 1970, the Dodge Charger R/T withthe 440 six-pack engine was “the car” for theyear. Legend has it that the six-pack enginescould easily handle the renowned Hemis.See the sidebar for complete engine specs onDon’s Dodge.Since its debut in August 2010, Don’sDodge won many awards, too many to listhere. Suffice to say, Don has created the “carof his dreams” the one his mind’s eye hadenvisioned for all those years.In July 2012, his car was displayed at theCarlisle All-Chrysler Nationals InvitationalDisplay. Across the way was Richard Petty’sSTP Dodge Charger, the car that reallystarted Don’s love of all things Mopar.Hats off to Don Lebeuf. His 10-year questto create the magnificent Dodge Chargerhe had dreamed about has been completed.Mission accomplished! •

  9. 9. 10 • Performance in Motion •Most companies have found that 1 inch lower provides the perfect balance withoutlosing the factory handing characteristics of the car. One inch was not low enough forour liking. The Eibach Sportline Kit lowers the car up to 1.4 inches.Ready? Jack up the car and safelysupport it with proper jack stands. Popoff the hub caps, remove the wheels andyou’re good to go.Use your jack to support the suspensionwhile you disassemble. You’ll use it to dothe reverse when you’re putting it backtogether.Work on one corner of the car at a time. Some OE strut assemblies have up to 10pieces which must be assembled in the exact order in which the factory installedthem. Disassemble one corner, and if you make a mistake or lose track of the order ofassembly, you can refer to the corresponding assembly as a reference.Use Spring Compressors on the OEMspring to reduce the tension on the topof the assembly, so that it won’t shoot offwhen you remove the tension nut.When changing out your suspension, note the routing and mounting positions of allwires, cables and brake lines. Reinstalling the lines differently from the factory positioncan result in damage or brake failure.The rear installation is easy. You just support the rear axle, remove the lower shockbolt and the axle will swing down allowing you to pull the springs out effortlessly.Reverse the procedure to install making sure the spring is properly in the mount.Buttoned up and back on the ground with new 18” FAST Europa wheels. You can seethe gap above the tire is almost completely gone. The stance is aggressive but theride is still decent and the handling is vastly improved.Nothing makes a ride lookbetter than new wheelsand a lowered stance. Not oneto leave things stock, we wantedto get rid of the wheel gap andincrease the cars handling capa-bilities. Needsome Disc Brake clearance?Wheel spacers are an inexpensiveoption as most don’t include any newmounting hardware, but you need to be careful whenchoosing thicker spacers.All wheel spacers reduce the number of threads thatyour lug nuts can grab onto. If you add a 15mm spacerto your vehicle, you’re taking away 15mm of wheel studlength, and that means your lug nuts won’t have asmuch stud to fasten themselves too. Obviously, fewerthreads = greater chance of loose lugnuts. (And nobodywants loose nuts.) •Up to 10mm (3/8”) SpacersENGAGE more threads with ET (ExtendedThread) NutsThese extended thread lug nutsensure there is more threadengagement on the relativelyshort factory studs. These arerecommended when using wheelspacers 10 mm or thinner. Alsorecommended for some thickeraluminum wheels. (Check first toensure they fityour wheel’sbolt holes.)Over 10mm (3/8”) SpacersLonger Wheel BoltsEuropean cars running wheel spacers arestrongly advised to get extended wheel studsto ensure you’ve got enough threads to safelyattach your wheels. Available in Cone or Ballseat in various threads.Longer Wheel StudsLonger studs are necessary when usingwheel spacers 3/8” thick, or thicker, to allowsufficient thread engagement of the lugnuts. ARP wheel studs are chromolysteel studs are heat-treated and havea 190,000 psi tensile strength rating.Bolt-On Spacers/Wheel AdaptersBolt-on wheel spacers are the bestchoice to add a large amount ofclearance. Bolt-on type spacers aresort of like hub extensions, they bolton to the existing hub, and thenthe wheel bolts onto the spacer.Adapters can be used to runwheels from another car with adifferent bolt circle. You couldeven put FWD wheels on a RWDvehicle!Wheel Hub Centric RingsMost wheel fitments have a gap between the hub and the centerbore. To fill the gap and ensure thefitment is hubcentric, hub rings are used. A hub-centric ring is basically a reducer bushing, designedto reduce the aftermarket wheel bore size from it’s current size to the O.E. bore size of the car youare trying to fit.Do you have Loose Nuts? The new Street Comp tires are designedfor late model muscle cars. With an asymmetrical design, bigchunky tread blocks, and 300 tread wear rating, these tires arethe real deal. We recently had the opportunity to test them atthe track, and Mother Nature volunteered to help us test themDry and Wet.The first thing we noticed is how quiet these tires are, perfectfor a daily. Rob Potter, Tony Hayes andcrew did a super job of finding new cars for2013.The show is different from year to year,making this a must-attend annual event.The Ontario Nostalgic Drag Racers(ONDR) were well represented as always,and held their Annual General Meetingduring the show.   17. 17. 18 • Performance in Motion •Growing up in Mexico City,Ruben Hernandez didn’t havemany opportunities to see lowriders. His dad was a car guy,but the family ride was a VW Beetle.Most drag races involved VW Golfsversus Jettas. One fateful day, an issueof Lowrider magazine fell into Ruben’shands, and he became smitten with the’64 Impala body style. Something aboutits unique roof line really spoke to him.Years later, Ruben found himself inCanada, and had the opportunity to seesome low riders up close and hopping.Right then and there, the hunt beganfor a 1964 Impala he could call his own.In 2001, a suitable ‘64 was found; itbecame his daily driver for a few years.A mild restoration began in his garage,but it was tough getting work donewhile concentrating on York Abatement,Ruben’s mold & asbestos removalcompany.Ruben had two important peoplein his life to help create the car you seebefore you. Most importantly, it was thesupport from his loving wife Susana, whoencouraged him to build the car of hisdreams. Another big piece of the puzzlewas meeting Jeff from Switches & Thangs,who had the talent to take the car to thenext level.This was a true frame off restoration,where more work was put into just theframe than some entire cars! The framewas fully wrapped with a belly split tohandle the abuse Ruben was planning ondishing out. The welds were smoothed inpreparation for a show-quality paint job.The body was sent to Detroit to besanded and prepped before being coatedin the deep blue base coat by “Fons.” ThenStory by Rob McJannett • Photos by Dave ThomasChilango 64

That’swhen all the patterns, details and specialtouches that make this car a unique piece ofautomotive art were created. This is a car youtruly have to see in person to appreciate.Once the paint was dry, it was broughtback North for assembly by Jeff at Switches& Thangs. Not that Ruben wasn’t workingon his ride too. He hand-polished all themany stainless lines throughout, along withany other job Jeff didn’t want to do! Almosteverything on this car is chrome-plated. Yes,that is a chrome-plated transmission hiddenunderneath the car.When I say everything has been chromed,I mean even the seat bracket. Yes the nutand washer that bolted it in too! Most ofthe chrome work was done by Taj & Dan atMetalCoaters in Malton. Today’s catalyst-equipped cars require oils withfar less Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP commonly calledZinc) than in previous oils. Earlier engine configurations requirezinc and phosphates to prevent engine wear. Recently rebuiltengines, that do not require the emissions equipment of the day,still need the same additives as in the past. Particularly flat tappetapplications, engines with high valve spring pressures, or thosedriven in high rpm situations.Zinc and Phosphates cause the catalytic converters on today’smodern vehicles to fail prematurely. Once this was confirmed, thecar manufacturers began lobbying to have these additives removedor decreased in oil. In the last 20 years, makers of oil decreasedthese chemicals from their formulas, thus preserving the life ofthe converters. Today’s late model engine configurations with lowvalve spring pressures and multi-overhead cam designs with rollertappets do not require the amount of wear protection that earlierengines do.The downside has been the lack of protection given to the earlierengine packages. Newly rebuilt engines using these modern oilsbegan to succumb to premature failure due to the lack of sufficientanti-wear films. In some instances in true high performancerebuilds that demise was right on the engine dyno. Race teams andhigh performance street engine builders took notice. The hunt forsolutions began.Smaller premium manufacturers recognized the need and beganto come to market with solutions. Companies like Royal Purpleand Joe Gibbs Driven offer a number of oils directly aimed atcorrecting the problems. Both companies make specific break inoils with high levels of zinc and phosphorus to protect new partsduring the crucial break in period. These oils are the ones youwould run either for the first 600 to 800 kms, or when breakingyour engine in on a dyno.After the break-in period, both manufacturers offer highperformance street and race oils that provide the maximum filmstrength required by high performance and modified powerplants. These oils are designed to protect your engine; current“regular” oils are designed to protect the emission equipment builtinto today’s late model cars.Specialty shops are very knowledgeable on these products andcapable of making sure you get the right product for your needs.Remember the price of premium lubrication products is far lessthan the cost of repairing failed engine components. To get thebest possible results from your performance engine be sure you areusing the right oils formulated with the critical balance of zinc,phosphorous and detergents.
