Expectations of the workgroup <ul><li>Develop recommendations for guidance, and if possible objectives, to be submitted to the Healthy People 2020 online comments section related to Social Determinants of Health on behalf of the CHPPD Section. </li></ul><ul><li>Comments need to be sent to APHA by Dec. 18 th for review before they are submitted </li></ul>
  4. 4. Decision Process <ul><li>Discuss, and write up the recommendations. </li></ul><ul><li>Allow at least [24 or 48?] hours for workgroup member feedback. </li></ul><ul><li>If members do not respond, we will assume they are in agreement. </li></ul>

Background for HP2020 grant <ul><li>Healthy People 2020 draft objectives have been released </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis on broad “determinants of health” approach </li></ul><ul><li>Lacks clarity on Social Determinants of Health </li></ul><ul><li>Commission is seeking input on objectives related to Social Determinants of Health in HP2020 </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Healthy People 2020 Vision </li></ul><ul><li>A society in which all people live long, healthy lives. </li></ul><ul><li>Healthy People 2020 Mission </li></ul><ul><li>To improve health through strengthening policy and practice, Healthy People will: </li></ul><ul><li>Identify nationwide health improvement priorities; </li></ul><ul><li>Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health , disease, and disability and the opportunities for progress; </li></ul><ul><li>Provide measurable objectives and goals that can be used at the national, state, and local levels; </li></ul><ul><li>Engage multiple sectors to take actions that are driven by the best available evidence and knowledge; </li></ul>

HP2020 Overarching Goals <ul><li>Eliminate preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death </li></ul><ul><li>Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups </li></ul><ul><li>Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all </li></ul><ul><li>Promote healthy development and healthy behaviors across every stage of life. </li></ul>

Eight Criteria when proposing or commenting on Objectives <ul><li>Result to be achieved must be important and understandable </li></ul><ul><li>Objectives should be prevention oriented and/or should address health improvements that can be achieved through population-based +individual/systems/environment/health-services/policy interventions </li></ul>
