  5. 5. Basic Operation of a Vacuum PumpThe basic principle behind working of vacuum pumps is removal of air from theenclosed system by suction to progressively decrease air density within the confinedspace so that the absolute pressure of the remaining gas drops and vacuum iscreated.
  6. 6. Basic Operation of a Vacuum PumpA vacuum pump converts the mechanical input energy of a rotating shaft intopneumatic energy by evacuating the air contained within a system. The internalpressure level thus becomes lower than that of the outside atmosphere. The amountof energy produced depends on the volume evacuated and the pressure differenceproduced.

  8. 8. Positive Displacement Vacuum PumpsIn positive displacement pumps continuous mechanism is employed for expanding acavity. Here the gases are allowed to flow in from the chamber and exhausted to theatmosphere after sealing of the cavity.
  9. 9. Transfer Type Vacuum PumpsIn transfer vacuum pumps momentum is created with a piston or propeller kind ofdevice in the pumps which pushes the gas around the inner parts of the pump. Thepiston in the pump accelerates the gas and air molecules, creating an area of lowpressure.The gas and air molecules begin moving away from the low pressure region andescape through the outlet valve of the pump. When the desired amount has beenremoved from the chamber, a closure valve is put into place to prevent themolecules from being pulled back into the container from the pump.
  10. 10. Entrapment PumpsTo perform more effectively, trapping pumps or entrapment pumps are usuallyplaced inside the space or container to be vacuumed. These types of pumps workusing chemical reactions. Some entrapment pumps operate by removing thecondensation or thin film created by the molecules in the air when they chemicallyreact to the internal surfaces of the pump.
