Html_Web_Design : Part IMultimodal Technologies For The WarehouseWhat is multimodal mobile computing and how does it work?Using multimodal technology all begins with a mobile, handheld computer thatsimultaneously uses several different peripherals. Devices such as those manufactured byIntermec and Symbol (Motorola) are examples of rugged mobile devices. Global positioningsystems (GPS) and Bluetooth technology, barcode scanners, radio frequency identification(RFID) and Vulcan Voice, CTGs voice technology, are just some of the peripheralsavailable. When used along with the multimodal input and output software applications, theentire system can dramatically reduce costs.The scanners used for barcodes have been used by both manufacturers and distributors formany years. Mobile devices can accomplish many tasks, but they are often used for oneimportant one: scanning barcodes. But imagine if these powerful multimodal devices wereused for many more operations?The barcode scanning device could be doing many more tasks than just scanning thebarcodes. A store employee could be using this same mobile unit for cycle counting,reporting DOA items, shelf replenishing, doing inventory, or even communicating with otheremployees in the store. These devices can even be used to guide employees with voicetechnologies such as voice recognition.Many companies have discovered that adding voice recognition capabilities to their existinghandheld computers results in an increase in safety and productivity. Voice guidedwarehousing operations such as voice picking allow users to listen to voice prompted workinstruction which keeps their eyes on task and both hands available for moving inventory.Voice picking improves safety in the workplace while providing a 10% to 60% productivityincrease and 99%+ order picking accuracy. A physical connector between electronic instruments and between electronicinstruments and a MIDI controller, usually a keyboard. The connector takes the form of MIDIIN and MIDI OUT jacks form which MIDI cables can bet plugged into any electronicinstruments (and youd be surprised at how much music hardware out there today is MIDI-capable almost every detachable keyboard is!)2. A message format this message format is the heart of MIDI. This format is made up notof the sounds themselves, but simply the commands that are issued by the MIDI keyboardto the electronic instruments telling them how to play a given song (play the violin turndown the volume to XX, adjust the pitch to YY, etc.)With the above two components, a musician was able to control a string of musicalinstruments from a single keyboard, giving him a one-man band effect.3. A storage format in other words, MIDI files. This latecomer of the MIDI trinity was whatreally did the trick because it allowed musicians to record their creations and tweak them onmany different parameters until they got it sounding just they way they wanted it. Withoutthis, MIDI songs could not be played back, because since MIDI commands include only theinstructions to the instrument on how to play the song and not the actual music itself, theycannot be recorded in audio format. Now MIDI files can be recorded, emailed, or evendownloaded from the Internet.A MIDI studio can now be produced in two ways via hardware or software. The hardwareversion involves connecting a keyboard (using MIDI cables) to the MIDI jack of an electronicinstrument and then stringing together up to 16 of these instruments in a daisy chain byway of their MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jacks.
