Background• POLHN was created in 2003• Purpose: to improve quality and standards of practice of health professionals through training and continuing education via on- line learning• Studying through POLHN access to opportunities for continuing professional development whilst in their respective countries
  3. 3. Objectives• Provide access to continuing education for health professionals• Strengthen the capacity of academic institutions to develop and deliver online courses• Develop and deliver courses and improve access to courses• Develop a regional continuing education accreditation framework
  4. 4. POLHN Courses• All of our courses are free• Levels of education include: – postgraduate, diploma and short courses• Currently, we have courses for: – Nurses – Laboratory technicians – Doctors – Radiologists – Dentists – Public health workers
  5. 5. POLHN Centres Across the Pacific 34 learning centers across 12 PICs with computers, internet access, projectors, and printers

Current Offering• A range of online short courses created by the WHO and other United Nations agencies• You can start these courses anytime, by creating an account at courses.polhncourses.org - Introduction to clinical pharmacy (new) - Food security courses from FAO (new link) - Psychosocial response in humanitarian disasters (from Nov. 2012) - Infection control and prevention (from Nov. 2012) - ICD-10 International Classification of Diseases - Gender in humanitarian crisis situations - Diabetes - HIV/AIDS & TB - Mosquito-Borne diseases - Risk Communication - Patient Safety - Comprehensive STI Case Management in the Pacific

POLHN through• POLHN sponsors 100 health professionals from around the Pacific every semester to take courses leading towards: – Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health – Postgraduate Certificate in Health Services Management – Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health – Postgraduate Diploma in Health Services Management• We are working with FNU to develop online courses for a “Masters in Public Health or Health Services Management”• Apply directly to FNU and include a POLHN application form with your FNU application.• Semester 1, 2013 starts in January 2013, apply ASAP

POLHN through• POLHN is offering nurses and health professionals across the Pacific, free access to all Lippincott continuing education courses (over 900).• The courses take 1 - 3 hours to complete and involve reading a journal article and then completing a multiple choice exam.• A full list of courses is available on the Lippincott website at www.nursingcenter.com• You can register to start courses at www.nursingcenter.com• To print your certificate when you complete the online course exam you will need a coupon code – POLHN can provide you with a code just email polhn.sp@wpro.who.int and let us know which course you are taking

POLHN through• GHEC offers 52 online courses in a range of public health areas.• You can access these courses by registering for free online at www.globalhealthelearningcenter.org• Each course takes 1 – 3 hours to complete.• Students who complete the final exam with a grade of 85% or more receive a certificate of completion for each course.• Some examples of GHEC courses you might be interested in include: – Community-Based Family Planning – Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care – Human Resources for Health (HRH) Basics – Immunization Essentials – Malaria in Pregnancy – Tuberculosis – Advanced Concepts

POLHN through• Dentalcare.com offers over 100 continuing professional development courses for dental assistants and hygienists.• The courses can be completed online or offline in 1 – 3 hours.• To start taking courses register at www.dentalcare.com• Topics include: – Diseases of the teeth and jaw – Infection Control Program in the Oral Healthcare Setting – Introduction to dental anatomy – Oral Cancer

POLHN through• Pacific Paramedical Training Centre and POLHN offer the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology [PPTC], Microbiology & Transfusion Science.• This diploma course is aimed at working laboratory technicians who have access to a lab where they can complete and record practical activities in logbooks.• To obtain the diploma, students must complete five topics (each topic takes about 3 months to complete): – POLHN045 Laboratory Technology – POLHN046 Haematology – POLHN047 Biochemistry – POLHN048 Transfusion Science – POLHN049 Microbiology• Start dates and application deadlines for courses will be advertised on www.polhn.org• To apply email a completed POLHN application form to polhn.sp@wpro.who.int
