What Not To Do (In Freelancing)

  3. 4. A bit about me <ul><li>But I reckon that these can all be boiled down to five key ‘don’ts’. Or as I like to call them… </li></ul>

  10. 12. #1 “The Yes Man” <ul><li>I accepted ridiculous deadlines and projects that were doomed to failure from the start. </li></ul><ul><li>I should have asked myself: “do I want to wake up next to my girlfriend – or my laptop…?” </li></ul><ul><li>… but I didn’t. </li></ul>

  14. 16. #2 “The Pauper” <ul><li>Beware of these common phrases: </li></ul><ul><li>“ I have a very tight budget but big goals, and…” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I think this could be the next ‘Facebook/Twitter’ if…” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I couldn’t pay you anything for the first two years, but if it takes off…” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I’m a social media guru – nice to meet you!” (this last phrase, to me, means – “I believe that you can use free things to do lots of stuff, and it’ll cost nothing, right? Yeah? Okay cool! So I don’t have to pay you anything to do that. Wait – why are you flipping me off?” ) </li></ul>

  16. 18. #3 “The Indecisive” <ul><li>In my life, I have learned that: </li></ul><ul><li>“ it is important to have a thorough debate about different points of view”. </li></ul>

  24. 26. #4 “The ‘ Fraidy Cat ” <ul><li>Customers have told me: </li></ul><ul><li>Their audience wants HTML5; </li></ul><ul><li>Their customers want something very specific, and; </li></ul><ul><li>They have knowledgeable people lined up and ready to work with me. </li></ul>
  25. 27. #4 “The ‘ Fraidy Cat ” <ul><li>And I’ve learned: </li></ul><ul><li>They don’t know what HTML5 actually is; </li></ul><ul><li>Their customers don’t want that specific thing at all; </li></ul><ul><li>Their definition of ‘knowledgeable’ is not the same as mine. Or my dictionary's. </li></ul><ul><li>( –adjective: possessing or exhibiting knowledge, insight, or understanding; intelligent; well-informed; discerning; perceptive.) </li></ul>

  28. 30. #5 “ Mr Assumption ” <ul><li>School taught me that: </li></ul><ul><li>“ if people are in important positions, they know what they’re talking about”. </li></ul>
  29. 31. #5 “ Mr Assumption ” <ul><li>Life has taught me that: “people are pushed upwards – when they should be going the other way”. </li></ul>

  33. 35. #5 “ Mr Assumption ” <ul><li>And whatever you do – don’t make out like you know everything. </li></ul>
  34. 36. #5 “ Mr Assumption ” <ul><li>You don’t. And everyone can smell bullshit. </li></ul>

So: <ul><li>Say ‘no’ sometimes; </li></ul><ul><li>Remember that you’re worth more than peanuts; </li></ul><ul><li>Learn how to make decisions; </li></ul><ul><li>Strap on a pair and tell the truth; </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t assume anything, and; </li></ul><ul><li>… you’ll be just fine. </li></ul>
