- 29. LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 30. The latest • Plastic Logic Reader, with ‘touchscreen-user-interface’ • To be on the market in 2009, target e-newspapers • But no color (yet?)...... LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 31. What they say • If e-newspapers take off, the savings could be hefty. • At the The San Francisco Chronicle, for example, print and delivery amount to 65 percent of the paperʼs fixed expenses. • However note that papers face a tough competitor: ʼtheir own Web sites, where the information is freeʼ. • And they have trained a generation of new readers to expect free news. • So, what will be the price of a e-newspaper? LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 32. The latest • Fujitsu A4 and A5 Flepia • 4096 color in a 768 x 1024 resolution • SD storage and USB port LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s

- 34. The latest • Liquavista - 2006 spin-out from Philips - transforms ambient light display - ColorBright • color and video, but not based on e-ink LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 35. The latest • LIVRE, a compromise on the (e)book.... LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s

- 38. Other applications LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 39. Digital Rights Management LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 40. Digital Rights Management • What about DRM protection of content? – DRM-0 - no security – DRM-1 - password protected – DRM-2 - individual name (on each page) – DRM-3 - device recognition, only once ‘code’ enabled • already being broken by SS-OCR (ScreenShot+OCR) • iTunes DRM is only for iPOD’s – any music from the iTunes Store can be copied any time on any audio CD and then to any other MP3 player • value of DRM is ‘what’.....? LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 41. There is no standard (yet) • PDF is not (easily) capable of being dynamicly ‘re-madeup’ for various e-reader devices • XML is the way to go – ‘epub’ is the XML for ‘reflowable’ digital content, already in use in Adobe Digital Editions, Sony Reader and Stanza Reader (iPhone) and more to come..... – Do you want to know more? • http://www.idpf.org/events/presentations.htm • http://www.openebook.org LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 42. LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 43. LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 44. Business models? • Look at Amazon - closed strategy, huge market, now 120.000 titles, read the first chapter for free – Selling e-books for $9,99, paperbook might cost $33,99 • the long-tail approach? • 1000 x $9,99 or 300 x $33,99 • lower costs with digital distribution, so more earnings – Publishers did not know that Amazone would sell e-books for that price.... • How did they make this deal? • Lawsuits to come? LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 45. Business models? • Innovation in the music industry did not come from the music industry itself - Apple with iTunes – who is in control of the chain, or will there be new ones? – will witers publish directly? – what will people want to pay for e-content? • Will telecom companies play a role in distribution? – what is the paying model for on-line connection versus content? • What role do publishers want to play? – how to react on Google Book Search...... LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 46. Business models? • ‘Chicken and the egg’ - content versus e-readers – innovating publishers and on-line bookstores starting up the change of the chain – most e-reader developers are slow • technology driven • but no push of content to the users - Amazon does this differently..... • Are schools and universities the ‘content-boosters’? • European situation different!! LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 47. At the Frankfurt Book Fair • Survey - 1000 industry professionals – Who is really in charge? • Publishers - 7% • Consumers - 22% • Amazon - 21% • Google - 20% • Telcos - 13% • Authors - 2% LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 48. At the Frankfurt Book Fair • Survey - 1000 industry professionals – Challenges facing the industry • copyright - 28% • DRM - 22% • standards (like epub) - 21% • retail price - 16% LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 49. LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 50. What the user wants • We have not reached the €100 price yet (AFAICS research) • Better user-interface, no buttons, but ‘touch-screen’ • Datacommunication WiFi but also UMTS/G3 • One standard would have to fit all...... • One agreed standard on DRM protection (if needed) • e-book shop direct on the e-reader • We might want color.... soon to come • We might want video.... might take a bit loner LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 51. LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 52. What to do for printers • Not easy to predict – content is in the hands of ‘others’ • but what about design, page-layout? • Adobe InDesign CS4 can export to ‘epub’ directly • Quark XPress with 3rd party XTensions – the distribution chain is in the hand of ‘others’ • but is this for publishers the key to do? • so can you do something here? – e-readers are developed and produced by ‘others’ LUIT Consultancy = T h i n k i n g - I n - C o n n e c t i o n s
- 53. e-book, e-reader e-paper thank you for listening! latest slides on: http://www.luit.nl/ by peter@luit.nl
