  • Collaboration: No collaboration Users could not connect to other users Users could not share their ideas online or even if they did, other users found it difficult to find The Portal was not proactive. It did not reach out to its users. The Portal did not connect users. User Interface and Interactivity: Not interactive Developer had to write lot of JavaScript and back end code No AJAX, so complete page refreshes were common Online Information Acquisition and Dissemination: Difficult since there was no standard to acquire and disseminate information. Speed: Portal was slow due to larger runtime footprint. Un used Dependencies linked. Re-usability: No common repository of re-usable components/libraries/widgets. Developers usually ended up re-inventing the wheel. Deployment: Footprint of the runtime was large. Developers always ran into issues with versioning, configurations, missing files and dependencies. Certain times we required a resource dedicated to handle the deployment. Developer productivity: Developers experienced only in a specific language could develop. WebSphere sMash benefits: Collaboration: Collaboration was good and proactive. Collaboration techniques like Wikis, Blogs, Forums, Feeds were used well because of which users could now connect, find and share the right information. User Interface and Interactivity: Very interactive Developer had to write lesser JavaScript and back end code, many common features, validations were available out of the box. Leveraged WebSphere sMash RIA, AJAX capabilities – DOJO Online Information Acquisition and Dissemination: Open community with transparent development and full knowledge online. Makes information acquisition and dissemination easier. Information is better structured. Speed: New-Reality Runtime – Application Centric: Simplify Execution by allowing the Application to be the server Run and Done… no long running servers. Eliminates common failures: memory leaks, isolation problems Maintenance: Easier with NRR Re-usability: Rich catalog of reusable services and libraries Give the user building blocks not just nuts and bolts Deployment: Deployment was simple, easier , very controlled and small in footprint. Developer productivity: Developers with PHP or Groovy or Java experience could develop on WebSphere sMash
