  • Good afternoon and thank-you for attending our session on Location-Based Services. I want to start by saying how pleased I am to be here today, working with a quality partner such as Compaq to bring Location-based services to Bell Mobility’s network. This is a very exciting time for SignalSoft and a great opportunity for you, as application developers, to help define these services in North America.
  • Korak Mitra from Webraska, and Adrian Vella from Bell Mobility, have done an excellent job in defining what LBS means to enhancing the user experience for mobile subscribers, and why you as application developers should embrace this technology. In my presentation today I cover some aspects of the underlying technology – and considerations you should have while creating services. I will talk about …
  • SignalSoft is solely focused on the business of LBS. Our primary customers are wireless operators, and our main products are infrastructure components that facilitate delivery of Location-Based services. Our Core product is a location gateway – a Mobile Positioning Center in CDMA networks, and a GMLC in GSM networks. This is the element that retrieves subscriber location from the network. The application that started the ball rolling for SignalSoft was our SafetyFirst product – this was developed in response to the FCC E911 mandate in the US and we have deployed this service to the majority of US operators. We have recently added a consumer application to our portfolio – our FriendFinder application. This was first launched commercially in the Telia network in Sweden. Applications are not our primary business – they are a means to providing an initial end-to-end solution and driving transactions through our gateways. Creating applications led us to the introduction of Location Studio – our location middleware product – that manages subscriber privacy and provides integration support for value-added services. SignalSoft has a world-wide direct sales force, but we rely on our channel partners to extend our sales and integration capacity. We also work closely with other technology and application providers to bring the best solution to our customers.
  • This is a view of our total portfolio. Note that the actual location methods and technology are not provided by SignalSoft directly. We do have a small number of applications, but we have a alliance program which extends the number of applications we bring to our customers
  • Next I will discuss briefly three different positioning methods – all supported by our Location Manager product and part of the LBS to be introduced by Bell Mobility.
  • Cell-sector delivers the position of the mobile as the centroid of the sector of the serving cell – reference picture. Primary advantage – available with all handsets, no modifications necessary. Primary disadvantage – variable uncertainty. Large variation from urban to suburban areas. For many applications this is all that is needed – and it certainly beats manually entering your zip code (assuming you know what it is).
  • AFLT and APGS generally go hand in hand. AFLT is based on measurements performed in the handset, and as such requires customized software in the handset – only the newest phones will support this (and not all of them). Accuracy is not as dependent on cell-size, so it delivers more consistent uncertainly boundaries. Not adversely affected in-building – therefore a good compliment to AGPS
  • AGPS is a handset-based positioning method that delivers consistent, high-accuracy measurements. It requires both hardware and software modifications to the handset.
  • SignalSoft was the first full member of the Location Interoperability Forum, which was founded in September 2000. SignalSoft supports the LIF in its efforts to create a set of unifying standards for interfaces to applications, and for interoperability and roaming. The LIF also works closely with the WAP Forum and OGC for harmonization of industry bodies.
  • Location Studio is our middleware product. Location Studio integrates to the operator’s value-added-services infrastructure and presents a common API to Applications for requesting location, sending and receiving sms messages, and exchanging billing event information. LSt provides a number of features to maintain integrity of the operators network, protect subscriber privacy, and allow for anonymous services. LSt supports add-on toolkits for content management and GIS services to allow application developers to focus on building apps and not common infrastructure.
  • Add XML and Java Interfaces There is also a survey on our developers site to capture additional API preferences (i.e. .Net, CORBA, ActiveX)
