How Western Alliance Bank is Innovating with Oracle Analytics Cloud

Published on

Western Alliance Bank had good visibility into profitability but lacked a platform that could pull data from different sources, model it, and create visual stories that empowered users to spot opportunities, forecast efficiently, and reduce risk.

Andrew Boucher, former vice president of FP&A at Western Alliance Bank, led the bank’s effort to find a cloud analytics platform that would meet its needs without being overwhelming to deploy and manage. The company chose Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) and partnered with Perficient to help.

We joined Andrew to discuss Western Alliance Bank’s experience with OAC, lessons learned, and how OAC could benefit your organization.

Discussion included:

-Challenges with the legacy environment
-Benefits realized with consolidated analytics, ability to trend KPIs, and drill to detail
-Best practices and methodology
-Latest development on Oracle Analytics Cloud

  13. 13. 13 With more than $20 billion in assets, Western Alliance Bancorporation (NYSE:WAL) is one of the country’s top-performing banking companies. We offer business banking services primarily in Arizona, Nevada, and California. We provide customized solutions for credit, treasury management and international banking. We are expanding nationally with specialized banking solutions to clients across the country. Specialized markets include Technology and Innovation, Hotel Franchise Finance, Homeowners Associations, Mortgage Warehousing, Resort Financing, etc. We rank #2 on the Forbes 2018 “Best Banks in America” list Western Alliance Bancorporation
  14. 14. 14 Western Alliance Bancorporation • WAL consolidated 3 bank charters in December 2013. Reporting requirements changed to a more regional, business segment basis. • Required a new tool for planning and reporting for business performance under the new reporting structure (including transfer pricing and allocations of shared expenses) • Needed to quickly migrate to a new planning tool at low cost in the fall of 2014. Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud Service (PBCS) was our best solution. We went live in January 2015 and still use it today. Journey to the Cloud
  15. 15. 15 Western Alliance Bancorporation Next step – Oracle analytics (BICS) • PBCS good for budgeting, profitability reporting and trending (Financials, KPIs) • CFO pushing FP&A to analyze productivity measures across the bank (Over 4 MM transactions processed per month) • Needed a true analytics platform to understand KPIs • WAL chose BICS because it offers... • Data modeling capabilities to organize disparate data sources and integrate • Excellent data analysis and visualization capabilities • Distributed reporting and dash boarding capabilities Journey to the Cloud
  16. 16. 16 Environment • Rapid growth, both organic and through acquisition • Multiple core and sub-ledger systems • No cohesive enterprise data warehouse Manual Reporting • Significant effort by several analyst to combine data • Reconciliation against the PBCS instance Constraints • Corporate philosophy of low expense growth • Limited IT infrastructure and staff Ad-hoc Analysis • No ability to drill into data for further analysis • Additional or detailed data must be pulled from source system, requiring significant manual effort On-premises Challenges

  18. 18. 18 • We can build a centralized location for our disparate data in the cloud (a virtual EDW) • We can use Oracle’s ETL tool called DataSync to schedule off hours data loading to the cloud • We can build and modify our data architecture as we need to and separate them in various “Subject Areas” • We can build grid based reports called “analysis”, traditional dashboards and visual analysis which allow us to slice and dice on-the-fly • We uncovered holes in some of the underlying transactional data – this directly led to a corporate-wide EDW project • We can integrate PBCS data to get a consolidated view of Actuals, Budget and Forecast What Did We Learn?
  19. 19. “BICS is only as good as you make it: good design, customer focus, and knowledge of the data is what makes for a great dashboard.”
  20. 20. 20 Key Objectives What steps did we take to build our corporate dashboard? • Identify and document our key data sources • Gather requirements (what do people want to see?) • Use ETL to load data to our cloud databases from multiple sources • Build an architecture in BICS that makes sense including facts, dimensions, measures and hierarchies • Build the grids and graphs that can be used in a dashboard • Build a dashboard using an iterative agile methodology • Constantly update and improve the dashboard with more features and functionality that help the largest audience
  21. 21. 21 Designing the Corporate Dashboard What KPIs does the Corporate Dashboard need to have? • Performance indicators • Revenue drivers • Loans • Deposits • Expense measures • Efficiency • Expense details • Asset quality • Non performing and adversely graded assets
