Thought leadership tips

Over the past 15 years of working with CEO's in micro businesses and SME's I have become very aware of the challenge they have about building thier profiles online. Time is an issue of course, but critical to finding the time is the motivation to share knowledge. Intention, knowing what knowledge is helpful to others and having a mindset to help others unconditionally is a big topic. I have found myself studying Thought leadership to understand the blocks, motives and barriers to successful positioning in a sector or online community.
I hope these thoughts are helpful, happy to discuss with anyone who needs some direction.

  • Great stuff, Penny. You've covered so much, and very succinctly. Sharing is the key word for me - no use having great ideas if others can't benefit from them.

Thought leadership tips

  1. 1. Thought leadership tips and blocks I have created this from aggregating some online content and books I read over the summer 2013 I have also added some thoughts form the way I teach thought leadership to my clients who are seeking their intent and voice online I have not directly copied any sentences so please accept this as original thoughts from me as I feel very deeply about this subject and it feels very instinctive to me when I see the way some people attempt to exert their opinions and aspire to be a thought leader. I hope this motivates you and gives you direction. I love this subject so please do tweet if you want to discuss further @pennypower
  2. 2. Thought leadership (Wiki) Thought leader is management terminology for a person or an entity that is recognized by peers for having progressive and innovative ideas. Typically thought leaders have proven themselves in the business, academic or political sphere through successful implementation of their ideas. Thought leaders often publish articles and blog posts on trends and topics influencing an industry or directed internal to an organization. Through effective communication and clarity of purpose, they effect change and are considered exemplary leaders *thoughtleaders need to be visible
  3. 3. How to become a thought-leader • Push the boundaries of your industry to create changing thoughts • Thriving in the industry that you have attached yourself to • See your ideas go viral • This changes a leader into a thought leader as others talk about them and follow them, this is how change happens • Change cannot happen if you keep it to yourself • You have to have a sharing mindset • Thought leaders are created because their thoughts have become ‘famous’ • They seek to educate the world/public • The are speakers, writers, and highly connected on social media • The business gains are notoriety, credibility, PR and exposure, BUT • You cannot be driven by YOUR gains • Regarded as one only by the gains you give to others
  4. 4. The obstacles to thought leadership, These things could stop you achieving it 1. Being offended by others who do not agree with your thoughts 2. Focusing on a ‘win’ result 3. Needing to be right- having strong opinions that (attempt) to control others 4. Your character appearing ‘superior’ 5. Seeking praise, needing your ego stroked 6. Identifying your thoughts with your own achievements, critical to share the achievements of your peers 7. Trying to grow your reputation rather than focusing on your character – (worrying about being known more than being liked) 8. Fearing ridicule 9. Thought leaders have to believe strongly in what they can see 10. “there are no statues to the critics” – remove fear
  5. 5. Thought leadership 1. You cannot claim to be a thought-leader 2. Only others will define you as such by your intention 3. Not about ego or being driven by self importance 4. This is not about being superior or having superior knowledge 5. This is not about acquiring anything 6. This is not about willing a result 7. A result driven intention takes you to EGO 1. If I do this I will be successful, wealthy, Number one, famous, top sales person 8. Thoughtleadership can only be driven by…
