A number of recent works in philosophy of biology have -- in perhaps unexpected ways, I will argue -- raised an interesting question about fitness. Namely, what is fitness actually for in the philosophy of biology? I will offer some novel arguments about the status of "predictive fitness" (in the sense of Matthen and Ariew (2002)), and will connect these to recent work by Abrams, Birch, and Millstein. I conclude by drawing some speculative morals for where we should direct future work.
