Agenda
CARIM
A Context-aware Model for QoE Analysis
in Mobile Environments
1 Motivation
the problem and the proposed solution
2 CARIM metamodel
description of CARIM features and benefits
3 Practical overview and Conclusion
working scenario, the experiment and conclusion

4.
The problem
When we analyze mobile interaction...
some methods use cumulative values → but interaction is dynamic
context matters → but context changes
some methods lack structure → hinders analysis/comparison
interaction data usually separated from quality perception → QoE?
this hinders mobile QoE analysis
Pedro Mateo (pedromateo@um.es) Diego Sevilla, Gregorio Mart´ınez ()Model-based QoE Analysis Interacci´on 2013 September 4 / 16
5.
The solution
Thus, we propose:
describe interaction stepwise, using turns
describe the surrounding context dynamically
structure parameters to allow comparison of interaction records
link quality perception to interaction records
CARIM metamodel does this way
Pedro Mateo (pedromateo@um.es) Diego Sevilla, Gregorio Mart´ınez ()Model-based QoE Analysis Interacci´on 2013 September 5 / 16
7.
CARIM: dynamic description of multimodal interaction
based on PALADIN1 ⇒ multimodal interaction metamodel
describes communication content + metadata by turn

8.
CARIM: context-aware
contextual factors affecting users experience with mobile apps
dimensions: physical, social, location/time, device and connectivity
context described by turn ⇒ dynamic environment
Pedro Mateo (pedromateo@um.es) Diego Sevilla, Gregorio Mart´ınez ()Model-based QoE Analysis Interacci´on 2013 September 8 / 16
9.
CARIM: perceived quality and cognitive state
describes perceived quality using parameters of a questionnaire
describes influencing factors for quality perception:
users mood and attitude towards technology
ratings linked to interaction ⇒ enhanced QoE analysis

10.
Benefits: unified criteria
same structure and metrics regardless of the execution environment
provides experts and tools with unified criteria
allows comparison between CARIM instances
Pedro Mateo (pedromateo@um.es) Diego Sevilla, Gregorio Mart´ınez ()Model-based QoE Analysis Interacci´on 2013 September 10 / 16
11.
Benefits: run-time nature
run-time nature ⇒ relationship (data ↔ time) ⇒ running instances
dynamic (stepwise) analysis of interaction
real-time adaptation decisions

Typical scenario of use

14.
The experiment
CARIM is in an experiment comparing
2 different interaction designs
the user has to play with a Lunar
Lander game, and then answer a short
questionnaire
we need more participants. Please, help
us and join the experiment...
using this QR code, or
going to www.pedromateo.es/carim-experiment.html, or
search for “phd experiment” in

15.
Conclusion
CARIM ⇒ parameter-based metamodel
quantifies mobile user-system interaction
describes live surrounding context
includes cognitive state and quality ratings
CARIM ⇒ unified criteria to describe mobile interaction
comparison of QoE records; reuse of analysis tools
CARIM ⇒ run-time metamodel
live interaction + context → stepwise analysis; decision
CARIM ⇒ ratings + interaction → enhances QoE analysis
CARIM is not alone ⇒ integration framework + HCI extractor
