  1. 1. In Junior Peak Time 2010 preliminaryrounds, students had to solve a set oftasks, namely simplelogics, Microeconomics, Managerial Economics &International Economics. The tasks were taken andadjusted from the introductory exercises, solved inSSE Riga. All the specific material and terminologywere explicitly explained in the document or thesource, where participants could read somethingthemselves, was given. In general, participantsliked the tasks, perceived them as interesting andresponded positively about the level of difficulty.The number of tasks submitted was a little bitbigger than the number for the case study.Participants had 10 days to complete a set of tasksand a case study.There were even some discussions about the tasksonline, initiated by the participants themselves(link).
  2. 2. Apart from the tasks, participants were asked to solve a case study, which consisted of three parts. The participants were asked tomake human resource management decisions in a knowledge-based company, optimize production processes, as well as makemarketing decisions regarding a brand introduction in a new market. Additional reading from one of the newest “McKinseyQuarterly” issues were introduced so as the participants would have a guidelines for their human resource management taskdecisions. The second part was made in order to check participants’ logical thinking and common sense, while the last one showed ifthe participants were creative and had a business-like mindset.The case study was made by the organizers with a help of y2 students from SSE Riga.The final result forpreliminary round wascalculated taking 30% ofresult for tasks and 70%for the case study. ACCORDING TOTHE JURY, THE EFFECT WAS VISIBLE ALREADY INTHE TEAM WORK SOLUTION PRESENTATIONS.

THE AIM OF THE TEAM WORK TASK WASTO MAKE THE PARTICIPANTS EXPERIENCEHOW IS IT TO WORK IN A TEAM AND TOUSE THE METHODS DISCUSSED IN THEGUEST LECTURE BY ULDIS PAVULS.AFTER THE INDIVIDUAL TASK, THEPARTICIPANTS WERE RANDOMLYASSIGNED TO INTERNATIONAL TEAMS.THEY HAD 90 MIN TO SOLVE A TASK AND10 MIN TO PRESENT THE SOLUTION.THE PERFORMANCE WAS EVALUATED ONTHE BASIS OF COMMON SENSEEMPLOYED, CREATIVITY, TEAM WORKDURING PRESENTATIONS, ENGLISHLANGUAGE AND PRESENTATION SKILLS.THE PARTICIPANTS APPRECIATED SUCH ACONCEPT AS THE USUAL COMPETITIONSAND OLYMPIADS IN THE BALTIC STATESREQUIRE INDIVIDUAL WORK.

SOME HIGH SCHOOLS STUDENTS CAME TOTHE EVENT WITH THEIR TEACHERS ORRELATIVES.THEY HAD A GUIDED TOUR INSSE RIGA PREMISES, PRESENTATION ABOUTTHE SCHOOL AND A DISCUSSIONAFTERWARDS, AS WELL AS AN EXCURSIONTO RIGA ART NOUVEAU MUSEUM.ACCORDING TO THE TEACHERS ANDPARENTS, THEY OBSERVED ANDAPPRECIATED THE CLOSENESS OF SSE RIGACOMMUNITY AND PERSONAL ATTENTION TOEACH PARTICIPANT.

Even though the competition day for the participantswas scheduled to be quite intensive, during the breaksthey had an opportunity to socialize with other highschool students and create networks with the brightestyoung minds from the Baltic states. In order to make the process of communication easier, the participants were invited to take part in the ice-breaking activities held outdoor. That worked as an introduction to team building lecture that was made afterwards, as well as helped them to relax after intense mental work during individual task. To make the stay in Riga as comfortable as possible, participants had assigned compadres, who escorted them to the SSE Riga from a bus station. Some of the participants stayed in Riga for longer thus they were accommodated in the modern SSE Riga dormitories. Compadres also took care that the participants would reach the dormitories safely, as well as guided them in Riga and presented the most interesting sights.
  9. 9. The winners were awarded with the scholarships in totalconsisting of 1100 €: 600 € for the best performance, 300€ for the second place, and 200 € for the third place.
