1. First of all, I'm going to talk about life sentence, also known as life
imprisonment.
Life imprisonment is the sentence of imprisonment that normally is
imposed for a serious crime under which the convicted person must
remain in jail for the rest of his or her life. In general, murder, severe
child abuse, rape, high treason or drug dealing are examples about how a
person could receive this sentence.
But life sentence doesn't exist in all countries. In a number of countries,
life imprisonment has been effectively abolished. Many of the countries
whose governments have abolished indefinite imprisonment have been
culturally influenced or colonized by Spain or Portugal. For instance,
Brazil, Dominican Republic, Serbia, Croatia and, of course, Spain and
Portugal. However there are other countries which still practise life
sentence like Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, France, among other
countries.
Capital punishment or death penalty is a legal process whereby a person
is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. Crimes that can
result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences.
Death penalty can be applied by committing blood crimes, homicides,
murders or high treason. There are different methods to execute
criminals like the electric chair or the gas chamber.
Death penalty has been practised by most societies in the past. Currently
fifty-eight nations actively practise it, for example, China, Egypt, United
States, Japan and Vietnam. There are countries that have abolished it, as
in the case of Australia, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Sweden,
Russia or Italy.
In my opinion, I might consider life sentence as a strong method to
punish people but, I don't agree with death penalty. On the one hand, it
is true that death penalty can make people or criminals think so much
more before acting badly. On the other hand, I think that execute people,
even if they have committed the worst mistake, is a crime too and it is an
unethical action. Moreover, this method can make innocent people die,
irreversibly. In conclusion, maybe the death penalty method should be
changed for other more humanistic methods in countries where it is still
used.
