  1. 1. Volume 2, Issue 5 First Aid Kit 7/01/2010 By: Dr. Patty Blakeslee VDM I am a believer in Murphy’s Law. In fact, I think Mr. Murphy sits on my shoulder sometimes. I try to give him as little opportu- nity as possible by being prepared. A first aid kit is a good start. Of course when it comes to my equine scrapes (as well as my chil- dren’s) it is really handy that I drive a large first aid kit, but it is quite simple to assemble a smaller version to fit in the tack room or trailer. As horses tend to be accident prone, wound supplies are a must. Clean water is initially fine to clean a wound of dirt and de- bris, though surgical scrub is nice to have on hand. I would then ap- PUD DLE DUCK CREEK TACK & APPAREL ply Triple Antibiotic or any antiseptic ointment. If it is on the lower leg, I would apply a bandage in the following layers: sterol pad, guaze, and vetrap or a standing bandage. Don’t use vetrap over the tendons as you could cause a bandage bow. If the wound is over a joint or tendon sheath, no matter how small, it is wise to call your veterinarian to discuss the case. It is also wise to have a tube of Neosporin Ophthalmic ointment in cases of eye injury. It is always safe to use until you are able to dis- cuss the situation with your vet. A tube of flunixin meglumine past is useful in the case of colic, fever, swollen eyes and other swellings. Always call your vet if you have to use this so they are kept in the loop...I guess your vet’s phone number should be easily accessible also. Phenylbutazone is also effective for fever, swelling and lame- ness. Other supplies to consider keeping are electrolytes, dexa- methasone and an inexpensive stethoscope. Your vet may have ideas for other supplies depending on your horse’s needs and your riding habits. So take that Mr. M! Patty Blakeslee VDM
