Michael The Chief Prince

 1. 1. MICHAEL the chief prince Laindon Bible Class 24 February 2010
 2. 2. Daniel 10

Final vision of chapters 10-12

3 weeks from 3 rd day of 1 st month

Response on the 24 th day

Michael’s assistance against Prince of Persia

Not even angels can do everything at once!

Dan 10:21-11:2 holdeth with me = to confirm

Mutual assistance, angelic teamwork

 3. 3. Ways of Providence p163

“ Men whose actions the angels have to guide, are allowed the unfettered exercise of their wills, and the angels have to influence them to exercise those wills in a given direction, by regulating the circumstances around them. If you set fire to a house, you cause all its inmates to leave, without interfering with their free will. It is the exercise of their free will that leads them to endeavour to escape the fire. So the angels, by disposing circumstances, can influence men to act in a certain way without interfering with their volitions. Such a mode of carrying out the work entrusted to them makes their work a delicate and interesting one, and provides scope for the possibility of that kind of human antagonism which requires careful and persistent arrangement to overcome, as in the case of the Persian emperor, who unwittingly was fighting against an angel in the particular policy he pursued.”

Robert Roberts.

 4. 4. Michael – your prince

Dan 10:21 – “your” is plural

An angel linked with Daniel’s people

Sequential prophecy of Daniel 11

“ what shall befall thy people in the latter days”

“ for yet the vision is for many days”

“ that which is noted in the scripture of truth”

“ now will I shew thee the truth”

27: “the end is yet to be at the appointed time”

35: “it is yet for a time appointed”

40: “at the time of the end”

 5. 5. Daniel 11:36-45

1.

A repetition of the campaigns of Antiochus Epiphanes.

+ Aligns well with the account of A.E’s invasion of Egypt in 1 Macc.

- v37 doesn’t fit

2. A large jump forward from v36 to describe a future leader and invader of Israel, either linked to the “man of sin” in 2Thess 2 or Gog of Ezekiel 38 3. A repetition of A.E.’s campaign but also using additional terms and features that relate to the future fulfilment (similar to the Olivet Prophecy) At that time shall MICHAEL stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people
 6. 6. Michael’s role

Michael is not a pre-existent Jesus

He is the same Michael as chapter 10

Stands over “the children of thy people”

1: to ensure that certain escape the time of trouble

2: to play a part in the resurrection

This is different from Jesus’ role

MICHAEL – a leading angel with a particular role of protecting and overseeing the affairs of Israel

The Book of the Watchers

A story of angels (Watchers) taking women on earth and fathering the Nephilim (giants). Other angels, including Michael, accuse them before God that they might be destroyed. Enoch plays a role of interceding on behalf of these angels that sinned. The giants are then destroyed in the flood.

Blasphemes the glorious ones = angels that sinned and/or accused

Refuted by using Zech 3:1-2

Stands over the “body” of Moses

It is not the role of angels to accuse or judge

Michael = “the angel of the LORD”
