  1. 1. What is Commencement?<br />The ceremony where you: <br />will receive your diploma.<br />wear formal clothes & academic gowns<br />
  2. 2. Do I have to come?<br />No. You can pick up your diploma at the school after Commencement is over.<br />Some students can’t come because of distances involved/timelines at their schools.<br />
  3. 3. Should I come?<br />Yes, it's an important evening for you and your family to celebrate!<br />It’s one last chance to see your classmates as a group and to thank your teachers!<br />
  4. 4. When is Commencement ?<br />Thursday, October 7th2010 <br />@ 6:15 pm <br />at Port Credit SS<br />
  5. 5. What are the Awards?<br />There are awards in most grade 12 subjects.<br />There are many other awards, some are academic and some which focus on involvement and achievement.<br />
  6. 6. All teachers have been given a copy of all the Commencement awards.<br />If you wish to see everything that’s available, check the criteria online at<br />
  7. 7. Most awards are decided on by the staff concerned.<br />But some awards are by student application only.<br />
  8. 8. Blue and Gold Award<br />Applicants should have a high level of academic achievement & be involved in school activities.<br />$100, bronze bar & bookends.<br />
  9. 9. Merit Award<br />Applicant must have shown significant academic improvement through their years at PCSS and been involved in extra-curricular activities in the school and/or the community.<br />$100, bronze bar & bookends.<br />
  10. 10. Lion’s Club of Credit Valley<br />Applicants should be a civic-minded, with evidence of active involvement in the community.<br />$300.<br />
  11. 11. Alumni Scholarship #1- Excellence<br />Applicants must have good marks and be going to a Canadian university. They must provide evidence of active participation in the school and community.<br />$750.<br />
  12. 12. Alumni Scholarship #2– overcoming adversity<br />For a graduate who has overcome adversity (language barriers, learning exceptionalities, other mitigating circumstances etc.) and is going to attend a Canadian university of college).<br />$750<br />
  13. 13. Alumni Scholarship #3 – SciTech<br />For a graduate from the SciTech program with academic excellence, who has made a major contribution to the school and to the community and is continuing in the science and/or technology field at university.<br />$750. <br />
  14. 14. Scotiabank Business Leadership Award<br />Applicants should display academic strength in two or more business courses in their grade 11 and 12 years.<br />demonstrate leadership and teamwork in the Port Credit school community.<br />is pursing a business related post-secondary education at a college or university.<br />$500<br />
  15. 15. Rotary Club Citizenship Award<br />Applicants should display leadership in the school and the community.<br />$250 & a trophy from the Rotary Club .<br />
  16. 16. Lux Numquam Desit<br />Port Credit SS’s most prestigious award award.<br />Applicant must be an exemplary graduating student who has made a major contribution to the school.<br />$500, bookends & bronze bar.<br />
  17. 17. So how do I apply?<br />Applications are available online NOW and are due NO LATER than Monday May 31st by 2:45 p.m. <br />Submit your completed applications to the folders in Guidance.<br />
  18. 18. One application per award applied for please!<br />No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.<br />Final selection will be made by the Awards Committee under the direction of the principal.<br />
  19. 19. What are the Subject Awards?<br />Given to the student with the top mark awarded at PCSS (no Night School, online school etc.)<br />
  20. 20. Don’t be shy…apply!<br />If you feel you qualify for one or more of these awards…APPLY!<br />You may encourage people to apply, but you can NOT apply for someone else.<br />
  21. 21. How do I get my invitations?<br />Will be sent in the mail to the address you gave the school. There will be an email account to RSVP to on the invitation. PLEASE RSVP!<br />If you haven’t received yours by mid-September, let the school know.<br />
  22. 22. What do I need to graduate?<br />Check your transcript online!<br />Make sure you have your 40 Community Service hours recorded in the Guidance Department!<br />
  23. 23. How is seating assigned?<br />Have your family members arrive early to secure good seats<br />Respect the seating limit of two. It ensures that every family has representatives at your graduation. <br />
  24. 24. Anything else???<br />Come to commencement ready to celebrate with your family & friends.<br />Enjoy the night: it only ever happens once.<br />Any questions? Just ask!<br />
  25. 25. So, on October 7th 2010?<br />Dress nicely.<br />Arrive by 6:15; there's food!<br />Be prepared to fill out a card with your current place of learning or employment and/or plans.<br />
