I am currently entering my senior year in graphic design at Iowa State. I have worked three internships Hearst with publishing houses (my most current one being with Esquire magazine through publishing), I am creative director of the school's student publication and have been hired for freelance work. I am pursuing a career in the magazine industry. If you are interested in seeing more work or a resume (or better yet, hiring me!), please email me at pcrowley.isu@gmail.com.

  1. 1. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE As creative director of Ethos magazine, it is my responsibility to design the cover. For both of these samples, I conceptualized the designs. I art directed both photo shoots and chose color samples. On the right cover, I collaborated with another designer to do the handwritten type.
  2. 2. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE I was assigned a page layout for a story about an anonymous gossip site called JuicyCampus.com. We had a photo shoot planned, but the photographer backed out last minute and we had to change the design. Within 24 hours, I conceptualized and created this page design.
  3. 3. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE For a class project, I was instructed to make a set of 25 characters. I chose the pop culture staple “The Wizard of Oz” as my subject. The characters were created on a grid and were constructed in Illustrator.
  4. 4. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE One of my class projects was to collect found images and create a collage using transparencies. After cleaning mine up on Photoshop, I really enjoyed the result; so much that I went on to use it as my Twitter background. I also turned it into a fake Absolut ad.
  5. 5. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE When I redesigned ETHOS magazine, I came up with the idea of a “Quickies” page: fast-paced, interesting information in a nuggeted page layout. It is inspired by the “know + tell” page in Details magazine, but my font and color choices make it appeal to a younger, less formal crowd.
  6. 6. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE For this class project, we were instructed to design information graphics. I chose to do my project as if it were spreads that you would see in a magazine like Entertainment Weekly. I decided to add to this project’s complexity by making characters inspired by illustrator Chip Wass.
  7. 7. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE As an assignment in one of my studios, I was asked to take a common saying and give it a new meaning. I had to do a poster with typography only, one with image dominant, and one where the image and text had equal prevalence. For my cliché, I chose “speak of the devil” and used it to depict my opinion of many churches’ hypocritical view of homosexuality.
  8. 8. ATRICK portfolioY P CROWLE Yes, those are condoms. They fit right in with the ‘lust’ theme! Check out my Flash animation at www.public.iastate.edu/~pcrowl/. During this past year, I developed a small obsession with the idea of the seven deadly sins. For an information design project in my Flash class, I chose to create an animation about the USA and the seven sins (www.public.iastate.edu/~pcrowl/). Then, for another class, I used the same characters and made paper models to represent the sins.

I conceived the idea of making a pixilated collage of faces. I was responsible for creating three faces, one for each of MetLife YourLife magazine’s demographics: ages 30-50 with children (top), career-driven adults ages 30-50 (middle), and ages 50 and older (bottom.)
