  • Frame grab/snapshot from UNR’s website at www.unr.edu; view is of the snow-covered Quad, with a view to the Mackay Mines building that houses the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library.
  • Details about UNR: the land-grant institution of the state, Carnegie I (high research activity), doctoral granting institution with over 18,000 students.
  • How is it that the library is involved/behind a public science event? As background: if you haven’t been to the library recently… well, suffice to say that the transition of print to electronic materials is enabling libraries around the world to transform from print repositories into vibrant knowledge centers at the hearts of their communities.
  • “It’s kind of a magical place” is a direct quote, overheard from a student describing the DeLaMare Science & Engineerilng Library to a faculty member.
  • The College of Science at the University sponsors the “Discover Science” Lecture series; speakers have included MichioKaku, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Greene.
  • Neil deGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan, Bill Nye… Oh, I get it!In hindsight, Bill Nye had a powerful formative impact on the kids who are studying science or engineering!

  • Our job? “Inject enthusiasm and energy to get things done.” 3Neatly summarized at http://changingminds.org/disciplines/leadership/styles/transformational_leadership.htmSomething incredibly powerful about leveraging individuals’ passions for their disciplines…http://www.ap.smu.ca/demos/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72&Itemid=85Orhttp://www.geeksaresexy.net/2011/05/03/mousetrap-fission/http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&docid=yTDeP_2jzg4loM&tbnid=dgIxMcA4djbwPM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fc21.phas.ubc.ca%2Farticle%2Fnuclear-fission-project&ei=_W_6UpSAEsWXqgHYtoG4Ag&bvm=bv.61190604,d.b2I&psig=AFQjCNGtooYDxWFJQFaNm3g5h8hinWe_aw&ust=1392230764613607Image credit: http://c21.phas.ubc.ca/article/nuclear-fission-project
  • Surprise! You’re organizing an event
  • Think Maker Faire meets Bill Nye the Science Guy.
  • Image on left: an Arduino-based DIY breathalyzer. Recently added 12 kits; have been unable to get the initial two back into the library!
  • A la Dr. Strangelove, with a saddle…A Burning Man “art car”, designed and built by Bill Brinsmead, electronics technician in the Physics Department; modeled after “Little Boy”, one of the first (and only) atomic bombs used in warfare.
  • And, of course, the secret ingredient: enthusiastic staff!
  • Success.
