  3. 3. Introduction<br />Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (March 1714 -December 1788) was a German musician and composer.<br />The second of five sons of Johann Bach and Maria Bach. He was a crucial composer in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods.<br />

Life (1)<br />1.- When he was ten years old <br />he entered the St. Thomas School <br />at Leipzig.<br />2.- In 1738, at the age of 24 he <br />determined to devote himself <br />to music.<br />3.- In 1740 Carl Philipp became <br />a member of the royal orchestra.<br />4.- His reputation was established by the two sets of sonatas which he dedicated respectively to Frederick the Great.<br />
  5. 5. Life (2)<br />His main work was concentrated on the clavier, for which he composed, at this time (1756), nearly two hundred sonatas.<br />He married JohannaDannemann in 1744. Only three of their children lived to adulthood:<br />- Johann Adam<br />- Anna Carolina <br />- Johann Sebastian<br />
  6. 6. Legacy<br />Through the latter half of the 18th century, the reputation of C.P.E. Bach stood very high:<br />- Mozart said of him, &quot;He is the father, we are the children.“ <br />- The best part of Haydn&apos;s training was derived from a study of his work. <br />- Beethoven expressed for his genius the most cordial admiration and regard.<br />
  7. 7. Musical Style<br />His keyboard sonatas mark an important epoch in the history of musical form. Lucid in style, delicate and tender in expression.<br />The content of his work is full of invention and, most importantly, extreme unpredictability.<br />
