  2. 2.  Education in Italy is compulsory from the age of 6 to 16. At the end of Scuola Media (Lower Secondary school)pupils take a school leaving exam and obtain a Certificate(Diploma di Licenza Media), but they are obliged to attendthe first year of an Upper Secondary School to carry out theircompulsory education. At the end of Upper Secondary Education (Grammar,Technical or Vocational Schools) students take a final StateExam (Esame di Stato) and obtain an Upper SecondarySchool Diploma. In Vocational Schools students can choose to take anexamination at the end of the third year in order to obtain avocational qualification (Integration project between StateEducation and Vocational Training run by local government).Students can then decide whether to continue till the end ofthe fifth year or leave school. Education is the responsibility of the Department ofEducation. Schools are administered by local school districts(C.S.A. Administrative Service Centre). According to the Education Reform Act, today stateschools are given a certain amount of administrativeautonomy. Principals (Dirigente scolastico, a sort of schoolmanager) are responsible for the school budget.
