Periparturient Arterial Ruptures in Mares

  1. 1. Periparturient Arterial Ruptures in Mares Arterial Rupture: a tear that occurs in an arterythatleadstointernalbleedingand death Average of 34 died each year for 15 years in case study Uterine artery most commonly affected area Uterine tear can be anywhere along the uterine aretery 60% of ruptures within 20cm of artery origin
  2. 2. Symptoms Typically occurs in older mares Progressing restlessness, colic-like symptoms, other signs of pain Pale mucus membranes and showing signs of shock Abdomen containing mass amounts of blood and blood clots 23% show no symptoms before death Internal organs are pale Past Health History 59% were barren within the past year Most mares had a mean foaling history of 7 foals 14% had a history of Dystocia Ruptures caused more because of arterial weakening and not trauma from foaling
  3. 3. Age at which Mares are most susceptibility Mean age of ruptures is 16.7 years Mean age of uterine artery rupture is 18.9 years 30% of mares older than 15 years died from ruptures Arterial ruptures tend to happen mostly in older mares Spontaneous ruptures in older mares and previous injury to area in younger mares
