If you need to contact me immediately, please call me at my home number which I will give you during class.<br />General Descriptions for Assignments in N5328<br />You will identify a problem that you experienced in practice and review the literature to determine what is known about the problem and to find possible solutions. Both theoretical sources and research articles will be included in the literature search. You will plan a study that will address the problem, and your study must include an intervention. <br />Identify a topic for the study. A way to identify an area of interest may be to ask yourself or colleagues questions such as: What problem have I experienced in practice? Is there a better way of doing something? Would another approach or intervention be more effective and improve patient outcomes? What research-based intervention exists to improve current care in terms of patient, provider, and health care agency outcomes? <br />Look in the literature for answers. Try to identify something for which you really want an answer. You might also get ideas from research articles from nursing specialty journals. Review a variety of web sites, such as: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ( and National Guideline Clearinghouse ( The important deciding factor is whether the intervention is something registered nurses, nurse administrators, educators, or nurse practitioners have control over.<br />Provide evidence that your study is worth doing (significance).<br />Develop a theoretical framework for the study. The theoretical framework is developed in several different ways. You may get ideas from the theoretical frameworks used in other studies. One or more of the theories in your N5327 textbook might be useful. Some theoretical information is well tested and might be found in textbooks. Nursing researchers rely not only on nursing theory, but also theory from psychological, sociological and biological sciences.<br />Limit the number of variables for your proposal to one independent variable and one or two dependent variables and use a quasi-experimental design. <br />The proposed study needs to be clear, focused, logical and simple. <br />All assignments are working toward the development of a research proposal. You will revise and improve your proposal as the semester progresses. I like Elizabeth Tournquist’s description of the process:<br />To produce a research proposal you need to think, read, and write – in that <br />order, though you also need to write, think and read; and to read, think, and <br />write. The process goes round and round and back and forth. First you read<br />and think, then you write , and as you write you think more. You also see the <br />flaws in what you have already thought and written, so you go back to thinking. <br />Then you write again, and because writing is discovery, you often find that you <br />have ideas and questions and even information that you didn’t know you had. <br />That leads you to new reading and further analysies and thus to new and <br />different writing. So the process goes (1986, p. 4-5).<br />The critique is not criticism. It is the process by which science progresses. Each student will receive feedback on assignments during the course of the semester. Feedback is designed to help you improve your proposal. Both the faculty member and fellow students will provide the critiques. I encourage you to develop an attitude where you see and value the critique.<br />Human Subject Protections Certification: Each student will complete certification at webpage You will need to register with the site and then complete the evaluation exercises at the end of each module. It may take several hours to read the content and complete the modules for certification. Print out or electronically copy/scan the Human Research Curriculum Completion Report to turn in with the proposal paper and keep a copy of the report for your personal files.<br />General Guidelines for Papers<br />The 5th Edition APA Manual (2001) is to be used in conjunction with the guidelines to demonstrate referencing style, levels of headings, and proper ways of including direct quotations in the paper. The APA Manual also gives additional information about grammar and punctuation, use of numbers and abbreviations, and development of tables or figures, which should be helpful in developing the paper.<br />Be sure the paper you submit for grading is complete, because that is the paper that will be graded.<br />Each paper is to have a formal title page. (Use the template at the back of the syllabus). <br />Do not include an abstract or table of contents.<br />Figures and tables should be inserted at the end of the paper as specified in the APA Manual.<br />Running headers are not required. <br />Headings within the paper are essential. First develop an outline of your paper count the number of levels you plan to incorporate. Grading Criteria Sheets are helpful in determining appropriate headings for specific assignments. See the APA Manual for further guidance. <br />Do not use quotations. Paraphrase and cite the source(s) for the information used.<br />Reference citations in text: There are specific guidelines for citing primary and secondary sources in text (first and subsequent citations, as well as for multiple citation of a source within one paragraph). Every sentence that is not your own original idea must have a citation to a source, even in the introduction to the paper. Any sentence that does not have a citation means you are claiming that idea as your own original idea (If it is not your own idea, it is plagiarism). <br />Reference list: See the APA Manual. The reference list includes only the references cited within the text of the paper. There are specific guidelines for citation of various types of sources. These guidelines include spacing, commas, periods, and order of elements of the citation. Students dropping a course must: (1) Complete a Course Drop Form (available online or MSN Office Room 605 or 610); (2) obtain faculty signature and current course grade; and (3) Submit the form to MSN Office Room 605.<br />A graduate student who desires to drop all courses for which he or she is enrolled is reminded that such action constitutes a withdrawal from the University. The student should indicate intention to withdraw from all courses by: (1) Completing a Registration Form (available online or MSN Office Room 605 or 610; (2) Obtaining faculty signature for each course enrolled and current course grade; (3) Filing the registration form in the School of Nursing Office Room 605; and (4) Filing the Registration Form in the Office of the Registrar in Davis Hall Room 333. <br />Graduate students may drop a course up to 12 weeks in the fall or spring semester and up to 8 weeks in a 10-week summer session. Under extreme circumstances, the Dean of Graduate Studies may consider a petition to withdraw after the designated drop date, but in no case may a graduate student selectively drop a course after the drop date and remain enrolled in any other course.<br />Last Date to Drop or Withdraw: October 30, 2009<br />Status of RN Licensure:<br />All graduate nursing students must have an unencumbered license as designated by the Board of Nurse Examiners (BNE) to participate in graduate clinical nursing courses. It is also imperative that any student whose license becomes encumbered by the BNE must immediately notify the Interim Associate Dean for the MSN Program, Dr. Mary Schira. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsion from the University. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." (Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Series 50101, Section 2.2)<br />Plagiarism:<br />Copying another student’s paper or any portion of it is plagiarism. Additionally, copying a portion of published material (e.g., books or journals) without adequately documenting the source is plagiarism. If five or more words in sequence are taken from a source, those words must be placed in quotes and the source referenced with author’s name, date of publication, and page number of publication. If the author’s ideas are rephrased, by transposing words or expressing the same idea using different words, the idea must be attributed to the author by proper referencing, giving the author’s name and date of publication. If a single author’s ideas are discussed in more than one paragraph, the author must be referenced at the end of each paragraph. Authors whose words or ideas have been used in the preparation of a paper must be listed in the references cited at the end of the paper. Students are encouraged to review the plagiarism module from the UT Arlington Central Library via<br />Bomb Threats:<br />If anyone is tempted to call in a bomb threat, be aware that UTA will attempt to trace the phone call and prosecute all responsible parties. Every effort will be made to avoid cancellation of presentations/tests caused by bomb threats. Unannounced alternate sites will be available for these classes. Your instructor will make you aware of alternate class sites in the event that your classroom is not available.<br />E-Culture Policy:<br />The University of Texas at Arlington has adopted the University email address as an official means of communication with students.
