Module 2:
Why People
Cheat
Module 2: Day 1
Do men and women really differ?
Today, we compare the sexual
attitudes and preferences of men to
those of women. Throughout the
world, men prefer more sexual
partners, set lower standards for their
partners, and approve of adultery and
divorce more than women do.
Although women may downplay their
sexual desires and experiences to
conform to expectations, the men
and women undoubtedly differ in
sexuality.
Module 2: Day 2
Sexual Conflict
Why are women so much more selective
than men about their sexual partners?
Today, we look at the consequences of
mating for the reproductive success of men
and women. You will learn that men can reach
far greater levels of reproductive success than
women, primarily because women must invest
so much more time and energy into each child.
Still, children usually benefit from additional
care provided by a father. This disparity creates
a tug-of-war between men and women,
in which each sex tries to selfishly
manipulate the other.
Module 2: Day 3
Mating Systems
What is our natural mating system? As
with other animals, humans display
remarkable flexibility in their mating
system. Everything from monogamy
to promiscuity and polygamy exists
somewhere on earth. Today, we explore
the factors that shape mating systems
in modern societies to learn that
people are surprisingly similar to
birds.
Module 2: Day 4
Adultery
Who cheats more often, men or women?
And do men and women cheat for the
same reasons? Today, we examine how both
sexes feel about adultery, how they respond
to discovering an adulterous relationship,
and the factors that make them cheat. You
will learn why men cheat more
frequently but still care more
about sexual infidelity than
women do.
Module 2: Day 5
Virtual Polygamy
Modern society provides safe ways for people
to experience sexual gratification with many
partners, either real or virtual. Today, we
explore the rise of pornography, prostitution,
and promiscuity in a world dominated by
technology. You will learn why people use
these outlets to create the illusion of polygamy
and how this illusion affects relationships
between partners.
