  2. 2. Basics Play-Doh is madefrom a basicsubstance calledstarch. To understand howPlay-Doh works,you must firstunderstandstarches.
  3. 3. Starches Two main starches:~amylose~amylopectin If both of thesecompounds areadded, the mixturewill gelatinize.
  4. 4. Retrogradation Retrogradation is the process the doughundergoes when it dries out. To keep it moist, you need aretrogradation inhibitor. These are usually waxy starches.
  5. 5. surfactants Since the compound is now to sticky,surfactants are added. Must contain hydrophilic and lipophiliccompounds. Surfactants make up 1% of thecompound.
  6. 6. storage Play-Doh must bekept in air tightcontainers. If they are not, theretrogradationinhibitors will dry out,causing thecompound to dryout.
  7. 7. Implications Play-Doh is FUN! It can teach us aboutstarches, sugars, andother organiccompounds. It’s FUN.
