4. PC BASICS II
PC Basics I and getting an initial orientation on
developing computer skills focuses more on the
computer itself OFFLINE.
Our goal for this class and succeeding classes is to
maximize the potential of a computer that is ONLINE
that is, hooked up to the World Wide Web!
5. Internet
(A little history & some serious stuff)
∗ Began in the 19602 as military network ARPNET
∗ Made of the items that allow computers to share
information: satellites, telephone and fiber optic
cables, modems
6. World Wide Web
∗ Web sites are written in HTML (Hyper Text Markup
Language) and can be set up by anyone with the
know-how.
∗ Web sites are composed of individual web pages
connected to one another by hyperlinks.
∗ The Internet is like a highway system that allows you
to get from one web site to another.
9. Finding Information on the Internet
∗ The World Wide Web carries information
from universities, the government,
businesses, and everyday persons
∗ Each web site has a URL (Uniform Resource
Locator) which is unique to that site. Typing
the URL will take you to the requested site
10. Finding Information on the Internet
∗ The World Wide Web is also indexed in search
engines which allow you to search for just the
information you need.
11. Using URLs
∗ URLs usually start with www (but sometimes no need to type
this in address bar)
∗ For example, www.unf.edu will take you the University of
North Florida.
∗ The ending of the URL can vary depending on what the site is
Some common examples:
.edu (education)
.gov (government)
.org (organization)
.net (network)
12. Keyword Searching in Search Engines
∗ Useful when you don’t have an exact web site in mind
∗ Yahoo and Google are most popular, but there are
several others (Alta Vista, Bing, Ask.com)
∗ Using more than one search engine is good because
not every web site is indexed on all the search
engines
13. Search Engine vs. Metasearch
Engine
Search engines (Google and Yahoo for example search
their own indexed web sites
Metasearch engines, such as Dogpile.com search
multiple search engines
A keyword search in Dogpile will find the results from
Yahoo and from Google.
