General activities of Southeast Bank IT department.
II – INTRODUCTION
Internship experience plays a vital role for every student to implement their theoretical
knowledge and get a practical knowledge from any organization. This report is prepared
as partial requirement of the three­month internship program for the SE students o f UB.
Southeast Bank Limited has given me the opportunity to complete internship program. In
the report I have mainly given concentrate on “General activities of Southeast Bank IT
department.”. Information has taken from bank’s website, Annual report, questionnaire fill
up and discussing with the employees. Finally I prepared this report under the
supervision of DEBAJYOTI KARMAKER Assistant Professor.
a. ​Rationale of the Study
With the growing competition among nationalized, foreign and private commercial banks as to
how the banks operates it banking operation and how customer service can be made attractive.
Commercial or private banks are trying to evaluate their traditional banking service to a better
standard, to meet the challenging needs. So they pay attention on better performance and
existence. Under the above circumstances, it has become necessary for Southeast Bank
Limited, one of the private commercial banks, to focus its attention towards the improvement,
who are actually executing the policies undertaken by the top management will have a chance
to communicate their feelings and will have the feedback about their dealings from the
customer.
b. ​BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND OF SOUTHEAST BANK LIMITED
Southeast Bank Limited is a second­generation bank that was established in 1995 with a dream
and a vision to become a pioneer banking institution of the country and contribute significantly to
the growth of the national economy. The Bank’s journey began when it was incorporated as a
Public Limited Company on March 12, 1995. The Registrar of joint stock companies and firms
issued the certificate of commencement of Business of the Bank on the same date. The
Southeast Bank received its Banking License from Bangladesh Bank on March 23, 1995. The
Bank’s first Branch was opened by Late M. Saifur Rahman, the then Honorable Finance

7. Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh as the Chief Guest at the
commercial hub of the country at 1, Dilkusha commercial Aroa, Dhaka on May 25, 1995.
In its arduous journey since, Southeast Bank has succeeded in realizing the dreams of those
who established it. Today it is one of the country’s leading banks in the private sector
contributing significantly to the national economy. The Authorized Capital of the Bank today is
Tk.10, 000 million. Its Paid­Up­Capital and Reserve reached Tk. 19,000.08 million as on
December 31, 2011. The Bank had 1, 848 staff of whom 152 were Executives, 1, 374 were
Officers and 322 were other staff as on December 31, 2011.
The Southeast Bank was established by leading business personalities and eminent
industrialists of the country with stakes in various segments of the national economy. They
established the Bank with a vision to bring efficient and Professional banking service to the
people and the business community of Bangladesh to help the national economy grow. The
incumbent chairman of the Bank is Mr. Alamgir Kabir, FCA, a professional Chartered
Accountant. The Bank’s Managing Director is Mr. Mahbubul Alam, an eminent banker of the
country with 44 years experience in both nationalized and local private sector banks to his
credit.
The Bank’s operations are built upon unequivocal emphasis on effective corporate governance.
The objective is to create, promote and build long­term company value. The Bank’s first and the
highest priority is to provide effective services and maximum satisfaction to the customers. The
ethos of harmony and co­operation is widely practiced in the Bank. They take pride in the fact
that the public and private face of the bank is one and identical. They believe that transparency
in decision­making, monitoring mechanism and full disclosure to shareholders and regulatory
authorities are essential aspect of Bank’s corporate governance and that they create and
intense pressure to rationalize Bank’s services and search for new competitive advantages.
They work ceaselessly within these parameters.A team of efficient professionals managers the
Bank. They create and generate an environment of trust and discipline that encourages
everybody in the Bank to work together for achieving the objectives of the Bank. The culture of
maintaining congenital work­environment in the Bank has further enabled the staff to benchmark
themselves better against management expectations. A commitment to quality and excellence
in service in the hallmark of their identity.
Southeast Bank has become a synonym of quality banking services and products. It has a
diverse array of products and services tailored carefully to cater to the needs of all segments of
customers. They are operational strategies are structured to address the special and often
complex needs of the customers. In the growth graph, the Bank has generated profit of Tk.
1,912.19 million after prevision and income tax in the year 2011. The curve keeps soaring
upward everyday making it one of the leading and most successful banking institutions in
Bangladesh with a total asset base of Tk. 158,074.59 million as on December 31, 2011.

Mission is the prime purpose of a firm. It makes goal more transparent to the people related to it
and shows them path to reach to that destination. Again, Oxford Dictionary describes vision as
“imaginative insight”. It is the long term goal of an organization. From this, we can assume how
much these two are important for the successful operation of a firm. It is said, “Mission without a
vision is a daydream and vision without a mission is a nightmare”.
Southeast Bank Limited is a third generation bank. They mainly emphasize on the excellence

Objectives of Southeast Bank Limited (SEBL)
Southeast Bank Limited aims at excellence and is committed to explore a new horizon of
banking and provide a wide range of quality products and services comparable with those
available with any modern bank in the world. The objective of SEBL is not only to earn profit but
also to keep the social commitment and to ensure its cooperation to the person of all level.
There are two type of objective of SEBL. These are given below:

Role of Information Technology
Information technology is working as a principle role in the global economy. IT gives great
benefit to have the facility to provide information world­wide great benefit to have the facility to
provide information world­wide. It will be the dynamics form of the new era. Today, the IT gives
communication and methodical power that organizations need to implement trade and
management companies globally with much comfort. Because of the present development of
information technology they can synchronize their worldwide network of suppliers, distributors
and customers, organizations have developed the global information system that a business
can run automatically with the time. IT denotes the communication of hardware and software
used depending on the requirement of the enterprise. And this how information technology plays
an important role in the present world.
III – ACTIVITIES
In South east bank it department there are different type of working team like Bank Ultimus
team, Network operation team, In­house software team, Procurement & hardware Support
Team.
a. ​Work­Related​ ​: As i discuss before a bank it have different team. I work with Procurement
and hardware team, and get little knowledge about Data Center and Disaster Recovery (DR).
1. Procurement​:
​Procurement is the acquisition of goods, services or works from an outside
external source. It is favourable that the goods, services or works are appropriate
and that they are procured at the best possible cost to meet the needs of the
acquirer in terms of quality and quantity, time, and location.
2. Hardware​ :
​Hardware, in the computer world, refers to the physical components that make
up a computer system.There are many different kinds of hardware that can be
installed inside, and connected to the outside, of a computer. In bank it hardware

14. team maintains computer hardware, keep all kind of hardware information,
decided new requirement, change old hardware at right time.
3. Data center ​:
A data center is a facility used to house computer system and associated
components such as telecommunications and storage system. It generally
includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications
connections, environmental control (e.g. air condition, fire suppression) and
security device. Large data center are industrial scale operations using as much.

Power supply in DC:
Power is a primary resource. Many instances of downtime are the result of power
problem. Power supply should be kept free of interruption or distortion. Servers should
be insulated against potential electrical problems. It is important to provide a separate
power source for the data center.

Cooling :
Data center heat removal is one of the most essential yet least understood of all critical
IT environment processes. As the latest computing equipment becomes smaller and
uses the same or even more electricity than the equipment it replaced, more heat is
being generated in data centers. Precision cooling and heat rejection equipment is used
to collect and transport this unwanted heat energy to the outside atmosphere.
Automatic fire extinguishing system :
A small fire in data centers can result in catastrophic loss by interrupting vital operations
and damaging high­value equipment. In these situations, it's important that fires be
knocked down quickly ­ before they have a chance to spread ­ and that sensitive
electronics and other equipment not be damaged in the process of putting out the fire.

SERVER :
A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to
systems on a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) over the Internet.
Many types of servers exist, including web servers, mail servers, and file servers. Each
type runs software specific to the purpose of the server. For example, a Web server may
run Apache HTTP Server or Microsoft IIS, which both provide access to websites over
the Internet. A mail server may run a program like Exim or iMail, which provides SMTP
services for sending and receiving email. A file server might use Samba or the operating
system's built­in file sharing services to share files over a network.
While server software is specific to the type of server, the hardware is not as important.
In fact, a regular desktop computers can be turned into a server by adding the

19. appropriate software. For example, a computer connected to a home network can be
designated as a file server, print server, or both.
While any computer can be configured as a server,
most large businesses use rack­mountable
hardware designed specifically for server
functionality. These systems, often 1U in size, take
up minimal space and often have useful features
such as LED status lights and hot­swappable hard
drive bays. Multiple rack­mountable servers can be
placed in a single rack and often share the same
monitor and input devices. Most servers are
accessed remotely using remote access software,
so input devices are often not even necessary.
While servers can run on different types of computers, it is important that the hardware is
sufficient to support the demands of the server. For instance, a web server that runs lots
of web scripts in real­time should have a fast processor and enough RAM to handle the
"load" without slowing down. A file server should have one or more fast hard drives or
SSDs that can read and write data quickly. Regardless of the type of server, a fast
network connection is critical, since all data flows through that connection.
In Data center a server have some information such as : IP, Row no,Os,Product
code,Setup date, Warranty,Memory,Rack No.
Access control:
Security for the Data Center is the Responsibility of the Data Center Management
Department. The Manager is responsible for the administration for this policy. The
following are the general requirements, policies and practices that govern access to this
sensitive area, for which the Foundation has responsibility. It is important that all staff
and business associates follow these policies and practices. Failure to do so is
considered grounds for personnel action. General Access is given to people who have
free access authority into the Data Center. General Access is granted to the Data Center
Management staff whose job responsibilities require that they have access to the area.

20. Limited Access is granted to a person who does not qualify for General Access but has a
legitimate business reason for unsupervised access to the Data Center.
Departments/projects that have equipment in the Data Center may request access to the
Data Center. The individuals designated by the requesting Department/project will be
granted access once the Data Center Management team head authorizes them.
Disaster Recovery (DR) :
A solid disaster recovery (DR) strategy is crucial to protecting a organization's future in
the event of a natural disaster or other emergency that causes downtime.Potential
Threats to be considered and mitigated against could include:
Natural Threats:Fire, Floods and Flash Floods, Hurricane/Storm, Earthquake.
Man­Made Threats : Terrorism, Explosion, Bio­Hazard, Epidemic/Pandemic,
Theft/Vandalism, Work Stoppage, Riot, Power/HVAC Failure, Communications Failure,
Hardware Failure, Software Failure, Security Incident.
Once we have defined your assets, we need to determine how long we can go without
access to this resource. This is called the “ Recovery window” for each asset.
b. Organization­Wide :

In information technology, a network is a series of points or nodes interconnected by
communication paths. Networks can interconnect with other networks and contain sub
networks.

● Wide Area Network(WAN)
● Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)
Network Topologies and Design Goals

21. A network configuration is also called a network topology. A network topology is the sharp
physical connectivity of the network. The network design has three major goals when
establishing the topology of a network:
● Provide maximum possible reliability to assure proper receipt of all traffic alternate
routing.
● Route the traffic across the least coast path within the network between the sending and
receiving DTE
● Give the end user the best possible response time and throughput.
The second major goal in establishing a topology for the network is to provide the least cost
path between the application processes residing on the Data terminal equipment.
This involves:
● Minimizing the actual length of the channel between the components, which usually
entails routing the traffic through the fewest number of intermediate components.
● Providing the least expensive channel option for particular application for instance,
transmitting low priority data over a relatively inexpensive dial­up, low speed telephone
line in contrast to transmitting the same data over an expensive high speed satellite
channel.

Network Overview:
The network architecture typically consists of tree routing, switching and security element with
progressively more specialized equipment moving up the network hierarchy. Today
management solutions focus primarily on individual pieces of the infrastructure and don’t
provide an application center view that span underlying hardware resource. The operational
challenges that customer face in the area is the result of a series of shortcoming in the IT
infrastructure they have today, and these shortcomings span from development all the way
through the operations.
Router:
A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least
two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's network. Routers are
located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.
Routers use headers and forwarding tables to determine the best path for forwarding the
packets, and they use protocols such as ICMP to communicate with each other and configure
the best route between any two hosts.
Southeast Ban IT department use different kind of router for communication. Those routers are:
● Juniper J­6350­JB ( core Router )
● Juniper J2350­JH (Branch Router )
● Juniper SRX­210
Juniper J­6350­JB ( Core Router ) :
● Designed to operate in the backbone or core.

● The entire service provide link connected to this router with additional module number of
the link can be increased.
● This device forward traffic to branch, SME center, Bangladesh Bank etc.
● As it is connected to Firewall so all data will be filtered over there.
Juniper J2350­JH ( Branch Router ) :
● Internet service provider link connected in the untrust zone of this device.
● In trust zone internet firewall in connected.
● Certain protocols are blocked for security issues.
● To connect with DC all the service provider link connected to the device.
● Static and OSPF routing configure toward DC.
● Trust and Untrust created for security concern.
Switch:
In networks, a device that filters and forwards packets between LAN segments. Switches
operate at the data link layer (layer 2) and sometimes the network layer (layer 3) of the OSI
Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join
segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet
LANs.
Southeast bank IT department use different kind of Switch for communication. Those switch are:
● Juniper Ex8208­REDUND­AC(Core switch)
● Juniper EX3200­24T(Branch Switch)
Juniper Ex8208­REDUND_AC:
● The entire access switch should be connected with the core switch for accessing servers
from inside.
● Provision to connect via Ethernet or fiber.
● 6 power supplied in each core switch ensures high level architecture for redundancy.
● 10Gbps link can connecting with external module for higher throughput.
● Data will be forwarding to firewall for deep scanning of any threat.
Juniper EX3200­24T (Branch Switch) :
● The entire server will be connected to DMZ switch.
● User from outside world can access data.
● User can access data at Gig speed.
● The entire user on a particular VLAN.
● Static IP configured on the switch.

25. Firewall:
Firewall is a software or hardware­based network security system that control the incoming and
outgoing network traffic by analyzing the data packet and determining whether they should be
allowed through or not based on applied rule set.
Southeast bank IT department use different type of Firewall for communication. Those Firewalls
are:
● Juniper NS­lGS­1000 (core Firewall)

Network Purpose, scope, and Objective:
Southeast bank limited intends to apply technology upgrade and additions several areas with
the objective of connections all the branches through wide area network. This WAN connectivity
will be used for following activities:
● Centralized banking operation
● Data transfer
● Internet Service
● Active Directory Service (ADS)
● VOIP for internal Communication
● Scalability for video conferencing
This connectivity must have highly secured system in place and faster data transfer with
authorized access from and to applications of Head office and branches.
LAN Connection at SEBL:
SEBL cables are connected with channel cable tray and using of ladders, pipes, insulation and
sound protection industry has made patch code which are used everywhere. Switch wire
manager and all patch panels are decorated in a network rack for different floor and network
operation center (NOC). All communication fiber cables are resolved and media converter
converts and installs in managed way in the network rack. The next frame is used for wiring in
the data center to connect all servers to switch servers and devices.
● Complete the switch design and configuration tab of the detailed design workbook in
order to finalize the design and configuration of LAN core, Distribution, and access
components.
● The VLAN design and configure tab of the derailed design workbook to finalize the
design and configuration of the VLANs and layer 2 segmentation.

SEBL follow a schematic diagram in their data center. There are main three division of whole
Data center of Main Branch they are, disaster recovery, Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and Data
center core zone. Now I want to show the schematic diagram of WAN.

Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) :
Demilitarized zone is a computer host or small network which act as neutral zone between
SEBL private network and the outside the public network. It avoids outside users from
getting direct access to a server that has company data. A DMZ is an optional and more

29. secure approach to a firewall and effectively acts as a proxy server as well. DMZ has own
router, Firewall, switch and also mail server, Internet banking server and substitute server.
Subnetting Examples in Branches
Here I get opportunity to take knowledge SEBL branches subnetting Class C addresses using
the method i want to described about it.
Suppose, The main IP address is 192.16.0.0 . The main IP address devided to 3 branches.
Dilkusha branch are connected to 64 PC’s here our subnetting 192.16.0.0 to 192.16.0.63 and

30. there CIDR value 26 , block size 64. Where is subnet mask 255.255.255.192. Mirpur branch are
connected to 08 PC’s Where is subnet mask 255.255.255.248. Aganagar branch are connected
to 16 PC’s, here our subnetting normally start 192.16.0.72 but Aganagar branch start
192.16.0.80 because Mirpur branch reserved some IP address. So our useable IP address are
192.16.0.. to 192.16.0.79. For that reason Aganagar branch subnetting are 192.16.0.80 to
192.16.0.95 and there CIDR value 28, block size 16. Where is subnet mask 255.255.255.240
c. ​ Other relevant activities​ :
● Internet Banking
The bank expanded its internet banking service range during the year. It has moved from
information display mode to transactional mode of operation. The Bank introduced below
mentioned services for its clients through internet banking:
1. Payment of utility bill for WASA, DPDC,DESCO;
2. Payment of student tuition / admission fee for North South
University;
3. Intra and inter­bank fund transfer;
4. Payment of GP and Banglalink postpaid mobile phone bill;
5. Opening of bank’s various scheme deposits and FDR account.
6. Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink , Airtel Top up.

The Bank got 77 ATM booths in live operation across the country and issued a
substantial number of debit cards to its customers. However the expansion of ATM
network will be continued at suitable locations across the country for next few years. The
Bank is also sharing ATM Networks of other banks, such as OMNIBUS and connected to
the National Payment Switch (NPSB) along with other two commercial banks.
IV – CONSTRAINTS
It is not very easy to achieve the maximum result from any project. Lots of limitation and
constraints make the whole thing though to reach to its ultimate destination. I faced some
limitations to accomplish this report.
Those limitations are
● For time constraints the duration of the study was very short to know all the
general activity of the IT department.
● Collection of information was difficult due to the policy about the secrecy of the
bank.
● Bank It is a very busy department. Therefore it was tough to give me time.
● Not enough information found from the Annual report regarding my topic.
● Academic knowledge is not enough for job sectors. Academy teaches us initial
level of knowledge but job sectors is vast area where we have to gather more

32. and more knowledge about our own sectors. But academic knowledge works
properly when we drop our CV in various Companies then it works like written
exam, viva etc. Academic knowledge increases our confidence to challenge or
face the threats of job organization.
V – ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Internship has been very much fruitful for me as i have gained a lot of experience on how to
work in an official and professional environment. This is my first experience in a banking area,
so these 3 months of internship program give me a different experience.It has give me the
chance to develop my skill and Data center management, Hardware management of a large
organization.
a. Implications to Organization/Company
Hardware : In information technology, hardware is the physical aspect of computers,
telecommunications, and other devices.
Network Printer : A printer connected to a wired or wireless network. It may be Ethernet
enabled and be cabled to an Ethernet switch, or it may connect to a Wi­Fi (wireless)
network, or both. See print server, Ethernet, Wi­Fi and production printer.
ON­LINE UPS : The definition of an ON­LINE UPS system is one where the Inverter is
supplying 100% of the load 100% of the time. It is always completely regenerating the
output waveform internally within the UPS. There is no transfer switch to be activated
upon loss of AC or when a brownout condition occurs. If the back­up power system does

33. not match these criteria, it is not an ON­LINE UPS.
Data center : ​ A data center is a facility used to house computer system and associated
components such as telecommunications and storage system. It generally includes
redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections,
environmental control (e.g. air condition, fire suppression) and security device. Large
data center are industrial scale operations using as much. Electricity as a small town. I
also gather a small knowledge on data center management which is a big part of my
intern time. In data center management means :
● Performance Management.

b. Implications to University’s Internship Program
District intern programs are similar to traditional American International university­Bangladesh
(AIUB) internships in that the intern is both a full time teacher and full time student. In a

34. university intern program, interns are employed by the district and are enrolled full time in the
university’s teacher preparation/education program. In a district intern program, the district
employs the intern and delivers the teacher preparation program. The IMPACT Intern Program
applies the concept of the district internship to a county­wide consortium model with the county
office providing coordinated development and geographically convenient delivery of a
comprehensive teacher training program to interns throughout the county. Upon completion of
the program, interns are eligible for a professional teaching credential. Funding to operate the
IMPACT Intern Program is from three sources: grant funds, intern fees and district in­kind
support.
VI – CONCLUDING STATEMENTS
a. ​ Recapitulation /Summary
The main purpose of the report is to provide a basic idea of Southeast Bank Limited IT
department, and how Southeast Bank Limited IT Performed. The report will also present
the various terms and conditions of maintaining the different services of Southeast Bank
Limited. Generally by the word ‘Bank’ we can easily understand that the financial
institution deals with money. The Activity of IT in a bank:
Bank has always been a highly information activity that relies heavily on information
technology to acquire process and deliver the information to all relevant users. Not only
is IT critical in the processing of information, it provides a way for the bank to
differentiate their products and services. Bank find that they have to constantly innovate
and update to retain their demanding and discerning customers and to provide
convenient, reliable and expedient services. Driven by the challenge to expand and
capture a large share of the banking market, some banks invest in more bricks and
mortar to enlarge their geographical and market coverage. Other have considered a
more revolutionary approach to deliver their banking service via a new medium: “The
Internet”.
Finally I would like to conclude by praising the entire internship program, through which i
have been able to achieve some significant experience and knowledge, as one of the
most crucial segment of my academic career which is certainly valuable for the
development of my future professional and academic career as well.
