CMAP’s FormationAt the urging of local elected officials andbusiness leaders, two regional agenciesresponsible for land use and transportationplanning were merged via state law in 2005 tocreate CMAP.CMAP’s mission is to plan comprehensively foreconomic prosperity and quality of life.CMAP is responsible for programming federaltransportation money and implementing the GOTO 2040 comprehensive regional plan.

GO TO 2040 ImplementationMicro-level: CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance programprovides planning and small grant assistance to helpcommunities implement GO TO 2040 locally.Macro-level: The Illinois Tollway’s $12 billion capital planfeatures three of GO TO 2040’s five recommended majorcapital projects and reflects our plan’s emphasis onmaintenance and modernization of the transportationsystem.GO TO 2040 is accepted as a new framework for futureprosperity by local business and civic groups (such asWorld Business Chicago) and the region’s mayors (via theMetropolitan Mayors Caucus).
