What is social media andwhat is it up for us? From pushing to pulling
Social media is NOT just
It’s friends, interaction, communication, meeting new people.
It’s exploring new possibilities and findingPhoto: Anna Gay interesting things.

With good, relevant content your message will fly. Social media might make it possible.

  • Social media is a nice sexy thing to include in everything. Media is talking about social media all the time and people are - at least supposed to be - thrilled to see how many users Twitters and Facebooks have or do not have. What does it actually mean and what has changed? Are we entering an era of Facebook?\nMy main point is that there nothing that major has changed in marketing and or communication with the social media, but we must be ready to leverage those things that has. And it’s not even that hard to do hat.\n
  • Social media is not a new innovation. IRC and BBS’s have been around for decades. The word is new and the consultants are new. Also, the startups are new. But are they there in 20 years? Maybe not. Facebook to me already seems to be declining and I’ve never even considered Twitter as the alternative. What will we see in 10 years, even 5? No-one knows just yet. Prolly it has something to do with location-awareness, ratings, personalization - but with a better and more intuitive interface.\n
  • \n
  • Internet has a lot to do with the present fragmented youth culture, dont you think? It is a lot easier to find new artists, music styles and fashion. You wouldn’t believe what kind of blogs and forums there is on the internet.\n
  • Is there anything nowadays that is not happening on the internet? We watch movies, listen to music, talk with people, date new people, learn, teach and whatever on the internet. Wouldnt you say it is our life? What is the part that is not happening on the internet? What can’t you do with the internet?\n
  • Newspapers are in decline, TV is in decline (or not, depends on the demographic, it seems), movie industry is in problem along with music industry. The one media gaining and gaining all the time is internet and it is gaining fast.\n
  • And that is counting everyone from 24-64. What do you think it is with even younger people? And this figure is a year-old figure.\nFastest growing demographic on Facebook: 50+ year old women.\n
  • Murdoch is the masterman of traditional media and this is what he has to say. I think murdoch has it all wrong when it comes to internet with all the paywalls and still he thinks so. Maybe he still knows something about the internet, anyway\n
  • and the list could go on. did we have 500 years ago 130 million writers? the easy access to media is very unique and the access is getting easier and easier all the time. Also, it is becoming a mobile access more and more. Most of the new internet users only have access to internet with a mobile phone. what does it mean for the future? We don’t know but surely something, dont you think?\n
  • The map of scandinavia 500 years ago seemed a lot different than now. maybe someone would think it’s better, but anyway it is something that we can’t have back. it’s just not an option.\n
  • so, we love the internet and internet is huge. what then? how about this social media strategy all the social media consultants keep on promoting? do we need a strategy? how can we get all the nice benefits of the internet? how do we get everyone love our company and or our events or organization? how do we get them love me?\n
  • We dont need it. social media and internet is all about people. they sense bullshit. most of the viral videos are not made by advertising agencies (and if they are, they are so good because people dont know what they advertise (for example that danish video thing where a lady was looking for his husband. it became viral but noone knew that it was supposed to promote denmark. how good advertisement is that?))\nyou might need some help of course, but the main thing is not those nice social media consultants creating fancy facebook pages with interactive applications. it’s about something different.\n
  • the social media and internet is not rocket science. most teenagers are more able on the internet than most communication specialists. most teenagers are at home on facebook and ceo’s think they need a consultant to handle that.\n
  • yeah well. what did i say about weird things on the internet? and about viral videos? one day i remember watching videos about water rockets. people really do make them fly on youtube videos. you better check!\n
  • I think most of us already have most of the things related with social media right. most of you who are here have to be pretty good social-wise. people like to listen to you, people like to trust you. if they do it in real-life, there is no reason they wouldnt do it online. its a lot easier to lie on the internet. that’s the thing with online dating, you know.\n
  • there is a lot of nice tricks you can do on youtube with the help of a professional. you need to know something about the logics of a certain service to be able to leverage its potential fully. a nice layout on a website or good lights on your flickr photos is never a bad thing. also, we professionals of course know a lot about analytics and advertising and all and it really helps. i can even prove that. i’m not totally useless.\n
  • yeah. so people are actually tweeting and comparing their tweeting capabilities to other people. how perverted is that? it’s like having an iphone which would somehow monitor your social capabilities in a bar and whenever you go to the toilet you check your phone and see ”oh, now my performance is a lot better than last week. im actually answering to peoples question with relevant answers and they tell about me to their friends. cool!” and then you go back to your friends....\n
  • i have one customer who is writing a pretty popular blog in finland and she knows nothing about blogging. at first i was trying to help her to be more ”internet-like” but after her blog became more popular than mine i decided not to. it’s not about nice tricks such as search engine optimization but simple tricks like ”write good content”. actually the logics of these services (google, facebook) is working hard against all the optimization. optimized content is bullshit content, usually. that is why google and facebook r trying to know what is really relevant and that is why your optimization tricks are like a drop in the ocean. it might work for a while, but if you are not relevant, it will fail, eventually\n
  • very important point. keep on adding those business card emails to your databases. and that is why i dont have any business cards with me. 90 trillion emails!\n
  • well, bad content just doesnt sell. that’s my point.\n
  • you have to be interesting, your organization has to be interesting, your event has to be. when you get people to love you, they will talk. is apple using social media consultants?\n
  • by dropping your advertising in ”old” media (notice boards and alike) and going to the internet is not going to help you alone. you need something (actually, a lot) more. Social media marketing: ”Enables others to advocate for your business through compelling content” -> listen, then respond. If you talked to people at a cocktail party like people market on social media they would kick you.\n
  • It’s not easy.\n
  • It’s not easy.\n
  • It’s not easy.\n
  • i want to have something optimistic to say as well!\n
  • I love the internet. I do everything on the internet. I find my parties through the internet. I am a ”digital native”, but that is something i can be proud of only for a short while. In a few years, everyone is native. Some even more than me.\n
  • Social media is not an answer to our question. more, it is a new challenge we have to face. it is a lot simpler to just share those flyers and print that usual ad on the local newspaper. now we actually have to interact with people. listen to their needs and be ready to see that they post that ”Your organization sucks” -thing on our Facebook wall. Still, as we saw it is not a reason to abandon social media, quite the contrary.\n
