  2. 2. THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF RICHARD AVEDON and worked as a portrait and fashion photographer from 1944. By 1946 Avedon had set up his own photography studio, from which he created images that were published in Vogue, Life and Harper’s Bazaar. Richard Avedon was born in 1923
  3. 3. His images captured the per- sonality and emotion of the subject, and as a result of his powerful portraits Avedon’s photographs graced the covers of almost 150 issues of Vogue. Avedon followed the legendary Fashion Editor, Diana Vreeland, when she moved from Harp- er’s Bazaar to Vogue in 1962. Starting as a staff photogra- pher, Avedon became the magazine’s lead photographer from 1973 until 1988, when Anna Wintour joined the staff as editor in chief. During his career, Avedon shot several well-known and loved fashion campaigns, includ- ing a Calvin Klein campaign that featured a young Brooke Shields; ‘The Most Unforget- table Woman’ campaign by Revlon; and the spring/ summer 1980s campaign for Gianni Versace. Avedon is also well-known for his series of studio portraits, in which he would capture the faces of politicians, civil rights workers and cultural dissi- dents. Furthermore, Avedon began to photograph patients in mental hospitals and pro- testers of the Vietnam War, as well as documenting the fall of the Berlin Wall.
